00:00The more and more we discuss it, and the more open you seem to be,
00:03and the more open I've always been on this,
00:05it just kind of feels like I guess you've always been open too on it.
00:07I don't know. I don't want to put words in your mouth.
00:08I've been pretty open on it, yeah, just because I'm trying to get off
00:11this carousel ride of quarterbacks.
00:13So I'm open to whatever at this point.
00:15Well, I think you're also just being logical about it all.
00:17And I know there's a lot of people listening right now
00:19that would say to themselves, no, Jonathan,
00:21you're the one not being logical.
00:22You want to bring someone in here that gambled and did this.
00:25I just go a little bit deeper on this, guys.
00:27The bet isn't whether or not Shoresby is going to ever gamble again.
00:3280% of people that gamble relapse, okay?
00:34That's not the bet you're making here.
00:36The bet you're making is whether or not he's going to gamble on games he's involved in.
00:40And by every account we have, he's never actually gambled on a game he's played in,
00:44but he has gambled on games on teams that he's obviously been a part of.
00:49He's been rostered on is what I've continued to write.
00:52He didn't even travel with the team when he was at Indiana
00:55betting on some of these games involving Indiana.
00:57Yeah, and so he's got three years of evidence suggesting that he won't gamble on games
01:02that he's actively playing in.
01:04And so I just look at it a little bit differently.
01:06And maybe I'm just giving him too much of the benefit of the doubt
01:10because when I see gambling, I see something different than most people see.
01:14And I think you fall in the same lens that I do, where we both gamble ourselves.
01:19Yes.
01:19And by the way, people that gamble, like myself and like yourself,
01:23the people we trust the least are other gamblers.
01:25Okay?
01:26You have to know that up the front.
01:27We trust other gamblers the least of everybody, okay?
01:30Our suspicions are always raised.
01:32And I'm telling you, I'm not concerned about this.
01:35If you made me bet a paycheck, whether or not he ever gambles playing blackjack at a casino again,
01:40I wouldn't bet that paycheck.
01:42Wouldn't do it.
01:43But that's not what we're talking about here.
01:44And obviously, we don't know.
01:46And maybe he did have a gambling addiction.
01:48And maybe he is genuinely trying to work through that.
01:52Maybe there was no gambling addiction and it was all just a cover story.
01:56Nobody truly knows outside of probably Brendan Soresby, his agents, and the people close to him.
02:02Like no one really will ever know that for real.
02:05But I do agree with you that even the games that he did bet on that he was rostered for,
02:11he bet on the team to win or on totals.
02:14So that really doesn't dictate anything or use any inside intel that he might not have or not have towards
02:22this thing at all.
02:23And I just look at this and like, if I've learned one thing, Jonathan, in the last couple of years
02:28that I've been in this profession,
02:30it's that sports is not a moral higher ground of any stretch of the imagination.
02:35These guys all are human beings like you and I are.
02:39They all have their vices like you and I do.
02:41And some of them are better about handling them than others.
02:44That's just the crux of it.
02:46Like, unfortunately, it's not the world that I grew up in thinking that these guys were supposed to be role
02:52models for our children.
02:53Like a lot of the times, that's not true.
02:55And if this guy genuinely is somebody that likes to gamble, I don't really care as long as he's not
03:00doing anything nefarious that's going to wind himself up suspending.
03:03Because I found a way to talk myself into the Deshaun Watson trade, even though I wasn't for that, because
03:09I want to see the Browns win.
03:11I want to see the Browns succeed more than anything else.
03:14So I think at the heart of it does lie that issue right there.
03:17And I think maybe this is why it's so easy for me to be like, well, I don't care.
03:20Because gambling seems so much easier than all the other things we've discussed and talked about with off-field.
03:24But I've never been the host that has asked you guys to bring Deshaun Watson into your house to have
03:30dinner with your daughter.
03:31That's not me.
03:32I've never said that.
03:34I don't believe in that.
03:36I do believe in the idea, though, that, again, I'm not asking you to hang out with the guy.
03:40I'm asking him to be your quarterback on your football team.
03:42I'm asking him to play wide receiver for your football team.
03:45You don't have to be best friends with him.
03:46You don't have to hang out with him in a public setting.
03:48I don't care about that stuff.
03:50Bring me titles.
03:50And, of course, we'd embrace, you know, the guy that didn't have any additional baggage, right?
03:56And I know that's what everybody's then pointing to with this 2027 quarterback class.
04:01Guys have just done two years of that, though, where everybody tells me this time every year that next year's
04:07quarterback class is the real deal.
04:08And it's the next carrot to chase.
04:10And I wind up chasing it because I am desperate.
04:13But I don't know.
04:14Arch Manning played a couple great games at the end of last year.
04:17He did.
04:17But against the Buckeyes, what'd he do?
04:19It wasn't great.
04:20Dante Moore.
04:21Everybody's talking about Brendan Sorsby.
04:23If he was so great, why wouldn't he have come out this year?
04:26Could you not say the same thing about Dante Moore?
04:28He probably would have been the second pick in the draft.
04:30I think he should have come out.
04:31To the New York Jets.
04:32I think he should have come out, too.
04:33So, like, any of the questions that we have about Sorsby and his game, separate from the gambling stuff,
04:39I think you could ask about any of these quarterback prospects.
04:42There's no such thing as a sure thing.
04:45Yeah, but I think why the gambling stuff, I think, is a little different than me saying,
04:49hey, Jalen Carter, you don't have to be best friends with him, but I think he's a good D-lineman,
04:54and I think you should take a risk, is the idea that gambling's treated differently.
04:59And so the punishment that will come from this is going to be much greater if he does have a
05:05misstep.
05:06I'm not going to keep throwing Jalen Carter's name in the mix, but if you're Tyreek Hill, let's talk about
05:14him for a second,
05:15you can have misstep after misstep after misstep after misstep, and you're still going to find your spot in the
05:19NFL, okay?
05:20Rishi Rice, did you see that video of him?
05:22He got out of jail, booked it to the car because there was a bunch of TV people waiting there
05:26for him,
05:27and then they've got a video of him, like, flying through an intersection.
05:30Which is the thing that he got in trouble for to begin with.
05:33That he was in jail for.
05:34Yeah, and there's second, third, fourth, fifth chances for other allegations, other vices,
05:41other whatever you want to call these things, other problems that you'd find yourself into.
05:44The only hang-up, and this is the only thing I give credit to the people that are like,
05:48nope, not touching him with a 10-foot pole.
05:50If he does have a misstep, you're one and done.
05:54Yeah, that's it.
05:55That's it.
05:55Your game is over.
05:57Yep.
05:57Blouses.
05:58But that's also why I'd advise them not to use any substantial pick on him in that regard as well.
06:03That's why we're talking third, fourth, fifth-round pick here.
06:05We're not talking about a first-round pick.
06:07At least I'm not talking about a first-round pick.
06:09I'll be honest, dude, and we've seen them, and part of the reason why,
06:12I'm not, like, campaigning for it, but I'm open to the idea of Brendan Sorsby,
06:17is because, like, if that's genuinely the price, if it's a third-round pick,
06:22shoot, even if it's a second-round pick.
06:23I mean, I very much F them picks, so you're not going to convince me that it's hard.
06:27I've seen this organization light draft picks on fire for the dumbest players imaginable.
06:33Yeah, it's true.
06:34This is at least a potential bridge to saving your franchise from the hell that you've created for yourself
06:40when you traded for Deshaun Lines.
06:42How many third-round wide receivers in a row did Andrew Barry take?
06:45David Bell, Antonio Calloway.
06:48It was three straight seasons.
06:50And none of them amounted to any Cedric Tillman.
06:52It was three straight seasons.
06:54Even if we wanted a second-round pick, you know, and maybe Andrew Barry's been a little bit better with
06:59those
06:59because you've got Delpit and Mike Hall Jr. and guys, Jeremiah Owusu-Koromoa was a second-round pick
07:04and guys that have made a difference in round two, but, like, okay, look towards a couple of GMs ago.
07:10Who were they drafting in round two?
07:11Yeah, yeah.
07:12Again, it's all a crapshoot anyway.
07:15I get it.
07:16I understand it.
07:17I would take that chance.
07:18If you get the value on it attached to it, and I think that's what Andrew Barry is weighing as
07:22well.
07:22Do you get the value attached to it?
07:24But it is interesting.
07:25And then, you know, we were talking to Jake before the meeting,
07:27and he was wondering whether or not Shador fans have a legit gripe against the Soresby discourse
07:31and whether or not Shador fans should feel some sort of way.
07:34And the only thing I would advise is this is not going to affect Shador Sanders.
07:37Not in the way that I think Browns fans or people listening might think that it will.
07:41If Shador wins the quarterback job week one, he's going to have an opportunity not only to have the quarterback
07:45job,
07:46but to keep the quarterback job.
07:47That's all you can ask for.
07:48Now, if he doesn't win the job, then guess what?
07:50He's behind Deshaun Watson as is, and maybe you can take all your hopes and dreams
07:54and flush him down the toilet to begin with anyway.
07:56But whatever quarterback starts week one, it will not be Brandon Soresby.
08:00I promise you, Brandon Soresby.
08:01I can promise you that.
08:02Whatever quarterback gets the spot week one, we'll have an opportunity to keep the job.
08:07It is that simple.
08:08Go out there and win games.
08:09That's what we said about Shador Sanders at the end of last season.
08:12When he finally got that opportunity, it felt like we had to wait so long throughout Flacco and Gabriel.
08:18It was painstaking, and we finally got to Shador Sanders, and it was like, well, here you go.
08:23You got a seven-game sample size.
08:24Don't give the reins back.
08:26And to his credit, he didn't.
08:27He played well enough against Vegas in that first game, and even when Gabriel was able to clear concussion protocol,
08:32they never went back to him, and it was Shador's job.
08:35But at the end of the day, in seven starts, J.P., and I know you and I are both
08:39Shador fans, that bears repeating.
08:42He threw 10 interceptions to only seven touchdown passes, and he took 23 sacks.
08:48So he didn't give the Browns that emphatic yes that they were probably looking for to stop them from having
08:55this competition
08:56between Watson and Sanders going into this season.
08:59Yeah, but I go back to that old poker line from, like, 1981.
09:02All I need is a chip and a chair, right?
09:04And that's all you can ask for.
09:06And Shador, you got your chip and a chair.
09:08Now you have to go out there, and you got to win the games and keep the job.
09:10You need another chip, right?
09:11You got to stay at the table.
09:13Okay, you played good enough poker throughout those seven games.
09:16You got to stay in the game for a little bit longer, though.
09:18I just don't know why Shador fans would have any gripe with how this is going down.
09:22The Soresby discourse is not going to affect you at all.
09:24If anything, it might affect Deshaun Watson.
09:26If it's not a true redshirt season, and then Watson was supposed to come in second,
09:31it might affect him, but it won't affect Shador.
