00:01After years of complaints over dangerous riding, pavement clutter and even links to organized crime,
00:07the Belgian capital has announced that rental e-scooters will disappear from its streets by the end of this year.
00:13Experts say that the design of e-scooters means that injuries are more severe,
00:17and riders who crash are more likely to suffer head and facial injuries.
00:22There are also concerns that incorrectly parked scooters can obstruct public rights of way
00:27and cause difficulties for people with reduced mobility or the elderly.
00:31The Brussels government also revealed that the scooters have been used by drug traffickers and organized crime groups,
00:37and that they were used in 25 shootings in 2025.
00:41This region had a need of order in the matter, so that's what we are doing.
00:45We are setting the order, especially in the public space,
00:48but also in relation to the very many accidents that we have experienced exponentially.
00:55But it is a fact that, in addition to all the rest of the criminalities,
01:01the view of the Prime Minister is very clear.
01:04The fact that we have to suppress shared bikes is also a plus in the fight
01:10compared to the shooting acts that we know in Brussels.
01:15While the city is moving away from e-scooters, it will strengthen its bike sharing network
01:19and plans to expand the availability of e-bikes on the streets.
01:23Brussels is far from the first city in Europe to outlaw shared e-scooters.
01:28Madrid, Paris and Prague have already removed them from use.
