00:09Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at details in Steven Spielberg movies hiding in plain sight.
00:15Since some of these details tie into the plot, there will be some spoilers.
00:20But I'm prepared to continue this assignment in the spirit you suggest, if I knew what it was about.
00:28Number 10. Artemis Embraces Her True Self. Ready Player One.
00:33It only makes sense that we'd commence this list with a film that relishes easter eggs,
00:37some integral to the plot and others for astute fans.
00:41Okay, here. Clark Kent glasses. They hide your identity without changing your look.
00:48One of the sneakiest details in the film is also among the most character-driven.
00:53In The Oasis, Wade Watts, or Parzival, meets his dream girl, Artemis.
00:58Of course, Wade doesn't know what Artemis looks like in reality.
01:01Eventually, Wade comes face-to-face with the real Artemis, Samantha Cook,
01:05who has always felt insecure about her facial birthmark.
01:08I've lived with it my whole life. You don't have to pretend.
01:12By the final battle, though, Artemis no longer feels the need to hide her face.
01:17She even adds a matching birthmark to her avatar.
01:19The fact that few viewers noticed this shows that her birthmark was never a big deal.
01:24You know the Distracted Globe?
01:26Yeah, the dance club.
01:30Meet me there.
01:3110 p.m.
01:32There's something I want to show you.
01:35Uh, buh-bye.
01:37Number 9. Indiana Motel. Disclosure Day.
01:40People are starved for the truth.
01:43I'm a part of it now.
01:45I'm just sorry they made you a part of it, too.
01:47In Spielberg's latest sci-fi film,
01:50Josh O'Connor's Daniel and Eve Hewson's Jane find themselves on the run
01:54from a secret government organization trying to prevent the truth from getting out.
01:58At one point, they seek refuge at a motel, which has a very distinct name.
02:03Indiana.
02:04It's easy to miss, although once you catch it,
02:06your mind will immediately go to Indiana Jones.
02:09I've got a bad feeling about this.
02:11Both even have aliens in common, for better or worse.
02:15We guess that since the film was already channeling Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.,
02:20a tie to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull isn't out of place.
02:29Number 8. John Adams Portrait. Amistad.
02:32You see, the Mende believe that if one can summon the spirit of one's ancestors,
02:36then they have never left.
02:40And the wisdom and strength they fathered and inspired will come to his aid.
02:46Anthony Hopkins' performance as John Quincy Adams is a highlight of this historical drama.
02:51Anyone who remotely paid attention in history class knows that this U.S. representative
02:55was the son of President John Adams.
02:58The younger Adams played a crucial role in the United States versus the Amistad,
03:02defending mutineers from a slave ship.
03:04Adams' speech before the Supreme Court builds to an especially poignant moment
03:08when he talks about summoning the spirit of one's ancestors.
03:11How when a member of the Mende encounters a situation where there appears no hope at all,
03:17he invokes his ancestors.
03:21It's tradition.
03:22While he refers to the defendants,
03:24Adams also alludes to himself with his father's portrait looking over him in the background.
03:29In this moment, Adams channels his father,
03:31who knew a thing or two about fighting for freedom.
03:34Adams then approaches his father's bust as if we're seeing double.
03:37We have long resisted asking you for guidance.
03:42Perhaps we have feared in doing so.
03:45We might acknowledge that our individuality,
03:48which we so, so revere,
03:50is not entirely our own.
03:53Number 7.
03:54Hook's Hat
03:54Hook
04:03This sort of sequel to the classic Peter Pan story sees the boy who wouldn't grow up,
04:07grow up.
04:08Much has changed since Peter last visited Neverland.
04:11For starters,
04:12Captain Hook finally took care of the crocodile that ate his hand,
04:16giving it the taxidermied treatment.
04:18Even in death,
04:19the crocodile still looms over Hook in more ways than one.
04:22Stay.
04:23It's that crocodile back from the dead.
04:25Hook's pirate hat has a specific design.
04:27It's shaped like a crocodile's mouth with gold teeth surrounding Hook's head.
04:31This not only calls back to Hook's confrontation with the croc,
04:34but also hints at the captain's fate.
04:37Although the crocodile was slain,
04:39Hook ultimately winds up back in his mouth.
04:41This time,
04:42the croc doesn't just come for the hand.
04:51Number 6.
04:53Foreshadowing Future Violence
04:54Munich
04:55Munich is one of the most haunting films Spielberg has ever made,
04:59chronicling the fallout of the 1972 Olympics massacre.
05:02Did we kill to replace the terrorist leadership or the Palestinian leadership?
05:06You tell me what we've done.
05:07Well, you killed them for the sake of a country you now choose to abandon.
05:11The film centers on the men enlisted to assassinate the Palestinians responsible for targeting the Israeli Olympic team.
05:17While revenge is exacted,
05:19the final shot subtly hints that the cycle of terrorism and revenge will continue.
05:23Such violence won't be limited to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
05:27It's not a coincidence that Spielberg chose to close his film on the New York skyline when the World Trade
05:32Center was still standing.
05:33It suggests that nobody will learn from what we just witnessed.
05:37Future tragedies will follow on a whole other scale.
05:59Once again, people will respond to killing with more killing, leaving the larger issues unresolved.
06:10Few moments in Spielberg's filmography are more iconic than E.T. and Elliot riding a bike through the night sky,
06:16as well as a later scene when multiple bicycles take flight.
06:29We got deja vu of this scene in Spielberg's pseudo-origin story, The Fablemans.
06:34What you might not realize is that E.T.'s flight is presumably an homage to one of Spielberg's favorite films.
06:50No, not the cat from outer space, although it's weird how both films have such imagery in common.
06:55Many have pointed to Italian director Vittorio De Sica's 1951 film Miracle in Milan,
07:01which culminates in the young characters eluding the authorities on broomsticks.
07:19Funnily enough, De Sica is perhaps best known for directing the classic Bicycle Thieves.
07:24Number 4. The Man with the Bond Gun, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
07:30Spielberg famously wanted to direct a James Bond picture when George Lucas came to him with something even better.
07:35The result was Raiders of the Lost Ark, with Indiana Jones becoming a hero every bit as famous as Mr.
07:41Bond.
08:03On more than one occasion, Spielberg's desire to make a Bond film has shined through in Indy.
08:09In Temple of Doom, Indy sports a white tuxedo with a red flower, matching the one that 007 wore in
08:15Goldfinger.
08:15Things would come full circle when Sean Connery was cast as Indy's father, but The Last Crusade contains another homage.
08:22During the final act, Walter Donovan shoots Henry Jones with a Walter PPK,
08:27which has been Bond's weapon of choice across various books and movies.
08:31At least he won't be using heroin-flavored bananas to finance revolutions.
08:36Number 3. Cameos. Various.
08:39Spielberg loves himself some cameos, some more random than others.
08:43In Jaws, the news reporter is Peter Benchley, the film's co-writer and author of the original book.
08:49Amity Island has long been known for its clean air, clear water, and beautiful white sand beaches.
08:55When Frank Abagnale Jr. is arrested in Catch Me If You Can,
08:58his real-life inspiration is among the arresting officers.
09:01As John Anderton keeps a low profile in Minority Report,
09:04the audience fails to recognize director Cameron Crowe and Cameron Diaz.
09:19Hook may have the most elusive cameos of any Spielberg film,
09:23with Phil Collins as an inspector and Glenn Close as the pirate sent to the boo box.
09:27Oh, and the couple kissing on the bridge?
09:30That's George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.
09:46Jimmy Buffett, Tony Burton, and David Crosby are a few others to look out for.
09:51Number 2. Nedry's Wardrobe, Jurassic Park
09:54If you want to dress as Dennis Nedry for Halloween,
09:57your options include a Hawaiian shirt, a members-only jacket, or a yellow raincoat.
10:02If you happen to have all of the above, you can actually go with your friends as the Goonies.
10:06I just saw the most amazing thing of my entire life!
10:10First you gotta do the truffle shuffle.
10:12Come on!
10:14Do it!
10:16Come on!
10:17Do it!
10:24Throughout Jurassic Park,
10:26Nedry's wardrobe echoes what Chunk, Mouth, and Mikey all wore in the 1985 cult classic
10:30that Spielberg conceived the story for.
10:32Goonies never say die, but the same can't be said about Dennis.
10:36While Spielberg has yet to confirm this was intentional,
10:39it wouldn't merely be a coincidence.
10:41It would be three coincidences.
10:43In any case, we can say one thing about Nedry with absolute certainty.
10:47He was watching Jaws on his computer.
10:50Thanks, Dad.
10:50Dennis!
10:52The headlights.
10:53Yeah, I'll debug the tour program when they get back, okay?
10:56Number 1. Star Wars References, Various
10:591977 was a huge year for Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.
11:03Although Lucas had his doubts about Star Wars,
11:05Spielberg was confident it would be a hit.
11:08Spielberg was not only right,
11:10but he paid tribute to his friend's film six months later in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
11:29As the alien mothership arrives,
11:31you can spot a small upside-down R2-D2 attached.
11:34When Spielberg and Lucas collaborated on Raiders,
11:37R2 and C-3PO are featured among the hieroglyphics when Indy locates the arc.
11:52Speaking of Dr. Jones,
11:54the club that Indy and Willie flee from is called Obi-Wan,
11:57a nod to Luke Skywalker's mentor.
12:00With E.T. also seemingly recognizing Yoda,
12:03a galaxy far, far away might be closer than we thought.
