00:08starting by removing the rope that holds it together.
00:11We've got to strip it right back down to the bear shell.
00:14It's one single rope, so we've got to go back together.
00:22I've just got to be careful that I don't scratch any of the heraldry work.
00:31I do like doing these types of restorations,
00:34because there's plenty of history there, and I'm here to keep the history going.
00:40There we go. Now the rope's off. We can take the top hoop off.
00:45There's the bottom hoop. There we go. There is the bear shell.
00:49Only half of the drum is decorated with heraldry.
00:52The other half is brass, and hidden from view when it's being played.
00:56So I'm just going to put some paper over the heraldry,
00:59so we don't get any grease or anything from the polishing.

01:11So now I've got to clean up and try and reveal the heraldry.
01:17We've got to take off the old coating that was on there before,
01:21the old lacquer, the old varnish, and get it looking a bit shinier.
01:25A combination of acetone, methylated spirit, and white spirit
01:29is used to gently clean the heraldry without causing any damage.
01:33Let's get the line going. Let's bring him back to life.
01:37So I'm trying to take the old varnish off, but there's a very fine line
01:43between taking the old varnish off of the gold flake.
01:46That's what I'm fighting with.
01:51We're not going to repaint because Gary wants to keep it as original as he possibly can.

02:01This has done well to last 100 years.
02:03We're going to preserve it for another 100 years.
