00:03there's a lot we still don't know about black holes but now experts say they're zeroing in
00:07on just how fast these cosmic bodies can move through space when black holes collide they don't
00:12just sit there at their point of contact remember black holes have incredible mass and despite still
00:17being quite mysterious they still adhere to the laws of physics mostly meaning when two of them
00:22collide they can be sent careening to the cosmos and experts say that recoil can approach the speed
00:27of light the researchers used a series of computer simulations to get their results eventually
00:32figuring out the upper limits of black hole speed with the researchers writing they can read speeds
00:37upwards of 28 562 plus or minus 342 kilometers per second or just under 10 percent the speed of light
00:45after a merger that's faster than five times previous estimates so far astronomers have only ever detected
00:51one black hole they believe was the result of emerging recoil and it was traveling at 1542
00:57kilometers per second for reference the fastest object ever created by human hands is the parker
01:02solar probe which is moving at a comparatively paltry 163 kilometers per second
