00:00Six people stabbed at New York's Penn Station just as the city is now preparing to host
00:04President Trump at Game 3 of the NBA Finals. What we know about the even more heightened
00:11security in place for tonight's game. And a deadly earthquake and the scary video that's
00:16coming in. Schoolchildren terrified. Buildings collapsing to the ground. New details this
00:23morning about the damage left behind. Sarah is out today. I'm Kate Baldwin with John Berman.
00:27And this is CNN News Central. Next, I mean, don't leave, don't go far because the president is up
00:33and talking about it already this morning. Very good point. What happens now is just as much in
00:38question. Exactly. We also learned overnight that six people were injured in a stabbing at Penn Station
00:43here in New York. Authorities say that they do have a suspect in custody. But this is getting
00:48extra attention now as New York City is now preparing to not only see massive crowds for Game 3 of
00:53the
00:53NBA Finals tonight, but also because President Trump is now expected to attend a press conference
00:59on security preps and what is happening is expected next hour. We're going to be keeping a close eye on
01:05that. The arena sits directly on top of Penn Station where the stabbings happen, which is an important
01:11part of context here. Point of context here. CNN's Mark Morales is live outside Madison Square Garden
01:17for much more on this. And Mark, what's the latest that you're hearing? But if you look behind me,
01:22you'll also see these barricades. These are very strict no bag policy, Kate. It was already a strict
01:29no bag policy. I can't imagine what even more strict no bag policy looks like going into the garden.
01:34But man, I mean, security is always tight. It is going to be quite something. People trying to get in
01:40and get out and everyone trying to keep it safe tonight. It's great to have you Mark there. Thank
01:44you so much. I really appreciate it, John. So right now there is a urgent manhunt underway in Toledo,
01:50Ohio for the suspects who opened fire near a popular neighborhood festival, injuring at least a dozen
01:57people seen for their lives. One witness described the scene as pandemonium. CNN's Gloria Pasmino is
02:04tracking this, you know, listening to the gunshots and knowing that this took place at supposed to be a
02:09fun family summertime festival, unfortunately canceled and impacted by this gun violence.
02:16Yeah, it looks like they need some help trying to track these people down now,
02:19which is what they're looking for. Gloria, thank you so much. Much more to come on this for sure.
02:22Also this for us, a fake boarding pass. So the breaking news this morning, Israel and Iran trading
02:28strikes in the most serious escalation of fighting since the ceasefire began two months ago. And
02:34President Trump is up and talking about it already this morning on social media, demanding that
02:39they, quote unquote, stop shooting. Iran launched a wave of missiles at Israel, while an Israeli
02:46assault damaged an Iranian petrochemical plant. All of it throwing into question now the already
02:52fragile peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. Iran's foreign ministry saying that the United
02:58States bears responsibility for Israel's actions. CNN's Fred Pleitkin is in Tehran. We should note CNN
03:06operates in Iran only with the permission of the government, but maintains full editorial control
03:11of its reports. Here's Fred's report. At least 19 people are reported killed after a massive 7.8
03:19magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines. We're going to show you the extent of the damage,
03:24even to large buildings there. The quake hit around 7 a.m. local time, just as public schools there.
03:31We're starting a new academic year. We're going to show you the moment. Dozens of terrified
03:35elementary school children. You can see you're experiencing this earthquake. That canopy, if you will,
03:41that overhang eventually collapses right where the children are. Fortunately, everyone was okay.
03:48Has largely passed, but still urging people to stay alert very clearly as sea levels can still fluctuate.
03:54The president of the Philippines has directed government agencies to act immediately to
03:58evacuate residents and begin rescue efforts to try to find those who could very likely be trapped
04:05under the rubble. This video, though, as it's coming in more and more, just terrifying this morning.
04:12John?
04:13And obviously.
04:14So just hours from now, Apple's worldwide annual developers conference is getting underway in
04:20California, and all eyes are going to be on the outgoing CEO. Tim Cook is, as you remember, set to
04:26step down
04:26in September, which means this is one of his final major events while leading the company. It's also a pivotal
04:32moment for Apple's long-awaited AI strategy, just more broadly.
04:37So the big thing that we're expecting from the conference today is a new version of today. And then, of
04:42course,
04:42as you mentioned, this is expected to be the last major event where Tim Cook is the CEO of Apple.
04:48So I do think we're kind of a fascinating thing of thinking of Apple, which was so ahead of the
04:54time, right? It changed everything is now seen as being behind, being lagging and behind when it
05:00comes to, like, the next revolution and evolution in technology with AI. It is a fascinating thing to
05:06see. It's good to see you, Lisa.
05:07Yes, thank you.
05:08Thank you so much.
05:09In Los Angeles, jury selection is set to begin in the trial of Jonathan Rindernacht. He's, he faces federal
05:17arson charges for allegedly starting this devastating Palisades fire last year. The fire,
05:23and as I said, it's happening in Los Angeles. These fires impacted so many people. How much of
05:30a challenge will it be, do you think, to seat a jury in this one?
05:33So, Kate, the dollar's worth of damages. Why do I start there? I start there because you
05:37impanel a jury from a community. And it would be difficult to find people who were either not
05:43themselves impacted or related or have a friend or someone else. And when I say impacted, there's
05:48a variety of ways. Did you evacuate? Do you know somebody else who evacuated? Did you lose
05:52part? That's kind of part of it. So a question on the case to be presented. I saw that after
05:59his
05:59initial arrest, prosecutors had said that Rindernacht had created these AI images that
06:05included one showing the way they described it as a dystopian painting showing, in part,
06:10a burning forest and a crowd fleeing from it. I bring that up because the judge had said that
06:15it can't be used. That's right. So is that a problem for the prosecution? Like, what evidence
06:19are they going to need to try to show what they say as he intentionally set this in motion?
06:24Sure. So what happens is, is that there are all these, the judge is disallowing that. Now,
06:28in terms of the prosecution, they have plenty else to talk about. Though certainly there's not,
06:33right, a guy who was mad at the world, he was fixing, called the police. And so the prosecution,
06:38to get this conviction is going to have to establish the one fire he set on January 1st.
06:44And what is the connection? Laying it out. Really appreciate it, Joey. John.
06:48All right. The breaking news continues to roll in this morning. Iran now announcing it is
06:53suspending strikes against Israel. Also after President Trump took to social media to demand
06:59that Israel and Iran, quote unquote, stop shooting. We're standing by for a press conference over
07:05security preparations as New York City is gearing up to not only host game three of the NBA finals,
07:11but also have President Trump attending that game tonight. And just after a stabbing in the area,
07:18injured multiple people. And a handcuffed suspect in the back of a police car tries to escape by
07:24taking the car with a police officer inside. Sarah is out today. I'm Kate Baldwin with John Berman.
07:31And this is CNN News Central. I was coming in about the people stabbed at New York City's Penn
07:37Station, which is steps from Madison Square Garden, where game three of the NBA finals is
07:42tonight. And the president of the United States will be tonight. A press conference happening this hour
07:48in security preparations. And a CNN exclusive report, EPA employees saying that they are being
07:54pressured to make harmful chemicals appear safer. Plus, an unexpected visitor catches a homeowner
08:01by surprise, the massive gator that the man said he thought was an Amazon package. Terrified.
08:09This morning, a suspect is in police custody after six people were injured in a stabbing
08:15at Penn Station in New York City. And this is getting extra attention now because Penn Station
08:19sits directly below Madison Square Garden, which is hosting game three of the NBA finals tonight.
08:25And also because President Trump will be is expected to attend said game. The press conference on
08:31security preparations around this whole thing is expected this hour. CNN's Mark Morales is standing
08:36by for that press conference to get underway. Mark, what's the latest that you're hearing ahead
08:41of this press conference is going to get underway this hour? We're going to bring that to you.
08:48I mean, if you've ever been in New York City when the presidential motorcade is even trying to travel
08:53across town, you know what that does. And so the fact that it's now going to be in the midst
08:59of
08:59right around the garden, right around Penn Station, and while everyone's trying to get to this game,
09:04it is a security nightmare to say the least, but something they can pull off. And Mark Morales is
09:09going to be there for that press conference to hear about it all. So a race to find survivors now
09:15this morning after a devastating earthquake levels buildings and sends people scrambling for cover.
09:21The video coming out is just terrifying. And also a CNN exclusive report, EPA scientists telling CNN
09:27that they're being pressured to make harmful chemicals appear safer. That exclusive reporting is just ahead.
09:37All right, the breaking news this morning, Iran says that it is now suspending its military operation,
09:44this version of it, against Israel after the two sides have been exchanging new strikes and also
09:50threatened President Trump's push for a deal. Iran fired a wave of ballistic missiles at Israel.
09:56This is all. Then Israel hit back, striking targets across western and central Iran.
10:03This also comes despite a report, first in Axios, that the president asked the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
10:11in a call Sunday to hold off on retaliating. We're told the two leaders held a second phone call today.
10:18On CNN exclusive for you this morning, scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency, the EPA,
10:23say that they are facing pressure to alter safety reviews of chemicals commonly found in consumer products
10:30and to downplay potential risks to human health and the environment.
10:34This reporting and concern coming out of the agency just as the Trump administration continues to roll back environmental regulations.
10:42CNN's Renee Marsh has this reporting. She's joining us now.
10:45Renee, tell us more of what you've learned.
10:48Okay, good morning.
10:49So much for the reporting, Renee Marsh. I really appreciate it.
10:52So the moment a suspect hijacks a police cruiser with an officer inside,
10:58what happened here and how this all came to an end? We'll be right back.
11:04You, I bet you, you can order it from Amazon. And I am not saying anyone should.
11:09Maine is heading to the polls tomorrow.
11:12Graham Plattner, who is still hoping to win the Democratic nomination and face Republican Senator
11:17Susan Collins come November, appeared to grow emotional during a town hall with supporters
11:22yesterday. This is after the latest controversy that he is facing. Several women coming forward
11:28to say he was volatile and toxic in relationships with them. At least one woman accusing Plattner
11:33of physically threatening behavior, which Plattner disputes. And while Plattner was welcomed
11:38by an enthusiastic and supportive crowd yesterday, Democrats continue to grapple with how to respond
11:44to this. I want to play for you Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna, who campaigned with Plattner
11:48just on Friday. Nice to see you. Thanks for being here. Let's start here with Graham Plattner.
11:53It is a seat that Democrats need to win if they want to retake the majority in the Senate.
11:59He clearly has supporters still turning out for him at events, despite the controversies he's facing.
12:04But you are seeing different responses from Democrats. I'm saying he's not a good candidate.
12:09He's not a good representation for the Democratic Party. And others saying he's been held accountable
12:13and taken accountability. What do you do with this? Yeah, well, here's the thing. First, the main voters
12:17are going to decide. Progenistic and shameful. And then believed he's taken accountability and clearly
12:22is still supporting him. But you do. There's that question out there, of course, is, is there more?
12:27Yeah. And that then becomes, does the, do you think he is a, it's, it's, if you really want the
12:35seat,
12:35is this the candidate? Well, it's Larry here or what's lurking out on the periphery. And so this
12:40is going to be a. So division in politics is something you've been talking a lot about. You just
12:44did a whole bike tour across New Hampshire. And I like proof that I'm still standing. I was impressed
12:50that you were still here standing because of it. You just wrapped it. Because insurance company
12:53knew one word in the English language. No, I've never heard him say yes. His wife sells or
12:58wife to be sells real estate. They both have individual plan, both paying for state, just
13:04et cetera. That's a good point. I mean, and this is a continuation of a lot of conversations
13:07you've been having with a lot of people and you and I have kind of been checking. You didn't
13:11pick Indiana, my home state. You did pick New Hampshire, which does send a message. Can I,
13:16is mom and dad going to let me in, stay overnight, shower? Absolutely. My father will totally let
13:20you stay over. It does send a, I'm exploring and interested in possibly running for president,
13:25possibly maybe exploring kind of a message. You can drop one of the adjectives. Yeah. Is,
13:29people are not wrong to think that. No, of course not. I've been up front about it. I'll supply.
13:34Everybody has lost, actually, not just the Democrats. And what I say, this is higher education used
13:39to be a benefit. Now it's become a burden. A middle class American dream that used to be the four
13:44pillars. Every one of them are, you hear that in Iowa, you hear that in Missouri, you hear it in
13:48Ohio, you know, Michigan. Let's continue the conversation. Thanks. Thanks for coming in.
13:53Yeah. And stretch out, Rahm. Thanks for being a new hour of CNN News Central starts right now.
13:59Right now, there is an urgent search happening in Toledo, Ohio for whoever started shooting near a
14:05popular neighborhood festival. At least a dozen people were injured. Five o'clock to try and narrow
14:10down their suspects as they continue this manhunt. Yeah. So suspects still on the run. 12 people shot.
14:16It is. Gloria, thank you. So President Trump is facing a new legal.
14:22So right now, search and rescue efforts are underway for survivors after a massive 7.8 magnitude
14:29earthquake struck the southern Philippines. At least 19 people are already confirmed killed.
14:35The earthquake triggered scenes of just panic as buildings began collapsing. It also hit around
14:417 a.m. local time, which is just as public schools were starting the new academic year.
14:47And there's this in the wider region. Officials, though, say at least that threat has largely now
14:53passed. Big protests in Albania and they are not letting up and is all over what Ivanka Trump just
14:59revealed. Plans that she and her husband, Jared Kushner, have to or have to now develop an uninhabited
15:05island and protected beach off the coast of Albania. So for days now, Albanians have taken to the streets
15:11to protest. The country's prime minister says that Trump and Kushner are part of a group of investors
15:16from around the world and an environmental review is still underway. John?
15:21All right. Haps, two real trials here, right? First, proving what he did. And second, the science behind
15:25if it actually had an impact one week later. Nick Watt, thank you for explaining that so well. Appreciate it.
15:30And thank you all so much for joining us. This is CNN News Central. The Situation Room is up next.
