Bargain Hunt - Season 74 Episode 5 - Newark 2
Transcript
00:00Ladies and gentlemen, let's welcome to the stage your Bargain Hunt host, the one and only, Danny Sebastian.
00:08Thank you, thank you.
00:10Hello, on the bill today we have two fabulous teams.
00:14Oh yes we have.
00:16And we've got two wonderful experts.
00:18But I shan't reveal them just yet.
00:21It's gonna be quite a show.
00:23Later I'll be learning about one of Britain's best-loved performers who entertained a nation for four decades.
00:29Because I'm gonna sing for you tonight, Playmates.
00:33Well, I'm a jolly good singer.
00:37It's Arthur Askey, of course, famous for his catchphrases.
00:41Hello, Playmates!
00:42Hello!
00:43Now that's a catchphrase. Here's another one.
00:47Let's go bargain hunting!
01:11Today's bargain hunt is taking place at this huge antiques fair in Newark.
01:16As usual, our teams will have £300 to spend and one hour to buy free items.
01:21One item must cost at least £75.
01:24And guess what?
01:26I'm also gonna chuck in a challenge.
01:28The team that makes the biggest profit or smallest loss will be crowned the champions.
01:33I think it's time to meet today's bargain hunters.
01:36I'm Sarah.
01:37I'm Graham.
01:38Look out, Blues.
01:39We're coming for you.
01:40New main business.
01:42Was it love at first sight for you two?
01:44We met at work back in the 90s.
01:47I was the new girl and I thought he was some top executive.
01:51He was gonna sweep me off my feet.
01:53It must have worked.
01:54I hear you play along with the show at home.
01:57When we're working from home, we'll meet in the kitchen, watch bargain hunt.
02:00All the family say I'm rubbish at it, but I'm gonna prove them wrong.
02:03Well, I hope there's a plan.
02:05He wants a golden gavel basically.
02:06That's what he wants.
02:07I want the golden gavel.
02:08Yeah.
02:08I want to wear the golden gavel to work on Monday.
02:11Fingers crossed.
02:12Let's meet your opposition.
02:15Hi, I'm Helen.
02:16Hi, I'm Nick.
02:17And we're gonna haggle hard.
02:18And bag some bargains.
02:20You're sounding competitive.
02:23Very competitive.
02:24You are much more competitive.
02:26I'm very competitive, yes.
02:27Does that mean Helen's the boss?
02:29I think she's probably in charge.
02:31Although I think if you say absolutely not to something, then I think I would listen.
02:35Would you?
02:35That's very good of you.
02:36Maybe.
02:37We'll soon find out.
02:39Going to share your tactics.
02:40So she'll be using my good looks charm to make sure that we're getting the best deal
02:45possible while she's strong arming them in the background.
02:48Better keep an eye on you, Helen.
02:50Right.
02:51Let's get this show on the road.
02:53Hello.
02:55Hello.
02:56How are you all?
02:56Very good.
02:58Are you ready for today?
02:59Yes.
03:00Absolutely.
03:00Firstly, of course, though, you're gonna need some money.
03:03300 pound.
03:04That's my responsibility.
03:05There's 300 pound who's got those.
03:07That's me.
03:08You're gonna need a challenge.
03:09Thank you, Danny.
03:10There's one there.
03:11Thank you very much.
03:11You're gonna need a challenge.
03:12And lastly, of course, you're gonna need...
03:14Experts.
03:15Of course.
03:15Well, they're in the fair.
03:16They're waiting for you.
03:17Go and see if you can find them.
03:18Ta-da.
03:19Go on, get going.
03:20Good luck.
03:21Now, I wonder what they think makes a good one.
03:25Someone who knows Esther.
03:27Someone who's great fun.
03:29Someone with an eye for a bargain.
03:31Someone who will keep us on track.
03:34Someone who's fun.
03:36Hello, that could be me!
03:37Woo!
03:38With the Reds, it's Rue Urban.
03:41Oh, Rue!
03:42Boo!
03:43I'm your man!
03:45And with you Blues, it's Caroline Hawley.
03:50Right, teams.
03:51Get those challenges open.
03:53An item with a connection to a team sport.
03:56Oh, goodness.
03:57A decorative ceramic item.
03:59Oh, easy.
04:01Easy.
04:01Yeah, no worries.
04:03Hey, now's not the time to clown around.
04:05Your 60 minutes start now.
04:08Right, guys.
04:09Let's go, guys.
04:10Goodness, you are fast.
04:11They know they're on the clock room.
04:13OK.
04:14Right.
04:15Keep up, Blues.
04:17What have the Reds been drawn to first?
04:19See, this is not my usual...
04:21I go for antique furniture.
04:23Georgian, Victorian.
04:25Yeah.
04:26But there's something about...
04:27I mean, this is obviously 20th century, you can tell.
04:29I mean, every single drawer has got a lock on it.
04:33Yes.
04:33So, I don't know, this could have been someone quite wealthy
04:37with papers or a desk for a banker or something like this,
04:41but this door...
04:42Do you think that's been put in afterwards?
04:44The door?
04:45Yeah, the middle of it, perhaps.
04:46I don't know.
04:47No, I don't think so, because the wood and the pattern
04:50and everything matches.
04:52I think this would be something that people would want
04:54in their house as well.
04:57Where do you put your knees?
04:58Yeah, yeah.
04:59Right.
05:00I will go find a price.
05:01Brilliant. Thank you.
05:02They seem keen.
05:03Now it's Helen's turn to pull out a drawer.
05:06Nice pine top, kitchen table, 19th century.
05:10So, it's quite a nice piece for a smaller kitchen, isn't it?
05:14Doesn't take up too much space.
05:15It's quite practical.
05:16Sorry, could we ask the price of this?
05:19Best price on that?
05:2170 quid.
05:2270.
05:23Is that your very, very, very, very best?
05:26Yeah.
05:27OK.
05:28About 60.
05:2960.
05:30It's got a bit of a chip in the corner.
05:33Does that...?
05:33Well, I think you would if you were that age.
05:36You'd have a bit of a chip.
05:37And it's got a good long leg on it.
05:39Yeah.
05:39Very often, they're on a stone floor and they've got wet
05:42and they've had to chop the bottom of the leg.
05:44Right.
05:45So, you see them either a bit wonky or a bit short of leg.
05:48I think that's nice, original condition.
05:51And that's the look that people want.
05:54Yeah.
05:54They don't want it all polished and shiny.
05:57Can I be super cheeky?
05:59No.
06:00Can you go to 55?
06:01I'll shake your hand now at 55.
06:04Aw.
06:05Thank you very much.
06:06Thank you very much.
06:06Thank you so much.
06:08You weren't joking about handling hard then, Helen.
06:11First buy in five minutes.
06:13Right.
06:13Excellent.
06:14Right.
06:15Only that.
06:17Now, will the Reds be following suit with the desk?
06:20What's the ticket price, Ruth?
06:22It wasn't a 35 that I would love it to be.
06:25He said it's 120, but the best he could do would be 90.
06:29He did say it's had a repair at the side.
06:31And I said, look, there's no space for the knees.
06:34Was it the bottom half of a dresser?
06:36And he said he thinks it's a standalone piece.
06:39But, I don't know, this looks like it's maybe being put on later.
06:42Yeah, that looks like it's a different wood as well, isn't it?
06:44Exactly.
06:45So that's maybe being put on later.
06:47It drew us in, but it's not going to make us any profit at 90.
06:50Onwards and upwards.
06:51A third of that, we could double our money.
06:53Yes, it could be a bit risky for auction.
06:56What's taking your fancy now, Blues?
06:58I love that.
06:59Oh.
07:00That's not ceramic, though, is it?
07:01No.
07:02That's stone.
07:03Yeah.
07:04That is cool, though.
07:05Yeah.
07:06How much is it?
07:0885.
07:09Do you like hippos?
07:10I love hippos, yeah.
07:12We've just been to Kenya and Tanzania this summer.
07:14Oh, we saw them.
07:14For thousands of people.
07:15Oh, digits.
07:16Yeah, so it's amazing.
07:17Yes, I do like him.
07:18Because he's cool.
07:19I like him.
07:20Sadly, you wouldn't tick off your ceramic challenge.
07:23The Reds have turned their attention to their team sport challenge.
07:27Here's sports related.
07:28Sports related.
07:29Do you know, even if, even if it was a programme at £3.
07:32£3 or something like that, yeah.
07:34We haven't failed the challenge.
07:36Yeah.
07:36Do you have any team sports programmes, like a football programme?
07:40Or anything sports related?
07:42Not with me.
07:42Not with me.
07:44No joy there.
07:46OK, teams, this is where I'm feeling a wee bit of the pressure,
07:49because the challenge can be make or break.
07:53Yeah.
07:53And if we are in a place with very little...
07:58Do we need to go somewhere else?
07:59They seem worried.
08:01You must have some ideas.
08:02Even maybe like a trophy.
08:04Yeah.
08:04Yes.
08:05A whistle.
08:06To start the match.
08:07It doesn't have to be anything that's going to make huge profit.
08:09It just needs to fulfil the challenge.
08:11Yes.
08:11Right now, which is our challenge.
08:14Don't panic just yet.
08:15You've only had 15 minutes.
08:18Hey-up, could the Blues be in luck with their challenge?
08:21Now this is nearly all ceramics.
08:24Yeah.
08:24Yeah.
08:24That's a big piece.
08:26That is a big...
08:27Yeah.
08:28I quite like that.
08:29Yeah.
08:29Now let's have a look.
08:30Oh, you picked that up, yeah.
08:31It's pool.
08:32Oh, yes it is pool.
08:35Pool pottery.
08:36OK.
08:37And what's the market like for that at the moment?
08:39It's OK for certain pieces and I think this is quite a big statement piece.
08:44Quite a statement piece.
08:45Yes.
08:46I think it is.
08:46Yeah.
08:47Do you want me to get a price?
08:48Yeah.
08:49Let's get a price.
08:50Yeah, please.
08:51Yeah.
08:51Well, fingers crossed you can afford it.
08:53Which is just personal choice.
08:55Right, I've got some news for you.
08:56Go on.
08:56Yeah.
08:57It is a good one.
08:58Yeah.
08:58It's a very good one.
08:59It's 1920s pool.
09:01Right.
09:01OK.
09:02Perfect condition and it's £1,000.
09:04No!
09:05Yes, £1,000.
09:06Oh, Lord.
09:07OK.
09:08There's some good things in that store.
09:10Oh, yeah.
09:10Maybe we'll look at another store.
09:12Yes.
09:12I think that's for the best.
09:14This doesn't look team sport related, Rhett.
09:17This is actually a bottle coaster.
09:20Now I really do want it to be silver.
09:23Is it marked?
09:24Ah, there we go.
09:26OK, sterling, 95 Birmingham hallmark.
09:29You've got the lion there, the assay mark.
09:32Yeah.
09:32But actually, I think that's really quite nice.
09:34I like that.
09:35Because they're often silver plates.
09:36Yeah.
09:37Or if they are silver, they've got a wooden base.
09:40But you would easily...
09:41It's a nice, good size.
09:42Some of them are small.
09:43Yeah.
09:43You can't get a modern bottle of wine in there.
09:45Yeah.
09:45You could put a round decanter in there.
09:47Yeah.
09:47Crystal decanter.
09:48You could put a bottle of wine.
09:50Shall we ask what the best price is?
09:51Brilliant, yeah.
09:52Sir, can we ask you about this?
09:53You've got £35 on it.
09:56What tasty price could this be?
09:5828.
09:5928.
10:00Could it creep more towards...?
10:0225.
10:0325.
10:0425.
10:04Do you want to go for it, or do you want to...?
10:06It's up to you.
10:07Let's go for that.
10:07Let's go for that.
10:08Yeah, I like it.
10:09Can we do 24?
10:11Yeah, 24.
10:11Yay!
10:12Oh, you're a good man.
10:13Thank you so much.
10:14Let's raise a glass to the Reds.
10:16They're off the mark in 20 minutes.
10:18Now, what about that team sport challenge?
10:21If you don't find anything here,
10:22I think we're going to have to switch locations fast.
10:24I think we should go.
10:25Let's go for it.
10:26Yeah, brilliant.
10:27Let's go.
10:27Good plan.
10:29Now, could this biscuit barrel tick off your challenge, Blues?
10:32Well, that is a decorative ceramic with a silver-plated lid.
10:38Let's have a look at the base.
10:40There's a faint mark on the base.
10:43I would think that's, yeah, EPNS to the top.
10:47What does that mean, Sammy?
10:49Electro-plated nickel silver.
10:51Right.
10:51So, silver-plated.
10:52Silver-plated, yeah.
10:53Any idea of age?
10:55Yeah, probably 1920s, 1910.
10:58It shouldn't be a lot of money, but how much is it?
11:00No.
11:00£15?
11:01Oh, well, it's not a lot of money.
11:03Would you put your bickies in it?
11:04I'd put my biscuits in that.
11:05Would you?
11:06You'd put your biscuits in it.
11:08Does it matter that there's sort of blue smudge and...?
11:11Oh, no, no, that doesn't matter, no.
11:14OK.
11:14And there's a little bit of crazing to the boys, but no.
11:18That's...
11:18I mean, it's not a lot of money.
11:20I think, try and get best price.
11:22Yeah?
11:23Go on, Ellen, show us your haggling skills again.
11:26Ooh, are the Reds in with a sporting chance here?
11:29That is a trophy and a hat.
11:32It's expensive, but it's a rowing trophy, so it's a team sport.
11:35Yeah.
11:35That's EPNS.
11:37That's silver plate for £310.
11:41You know what?
11:42If that was silver, I'd be buying it.
11:45It's W and H, Walker and Hall.
11:47Right.
11:47Really, really good maker.
11:49Fabulous name.
11:50They would have been commissioned to make this rowing trophy.
11:53And look at it.
11:54I mean, if you're in a rowing club, that's exactly what you want.
11:57The handles are the oars.
11:59It's got the rope around the side.
12:01It is absolutely a one-off commission piece.
12:03Yeah.
12:04Not engraved, which means it's good.
12:06Yeah.
12:06It doesn't decrease the value.
12:08But it's ticking all the right boxes and rowing is a team sport.
12:11Yeah.
12:12But it's £310, which we don't have.
12:16And it's silver plate.
12:17I mean, you can ask what the best price is, but it would have to be...
12:20What would it have to be?
12:22South of 70.
12:24Oh, wow.
12:24South of 70, right.
12:26Wow.
12:26Do you want to ask?
12:27We might as well ask.
12:29Sounds like a big ask to me.
12:31Talking of asks, how's Helen getting on with that biscuit barrel?
12:35We quite like your biscuits...
12:37OK, yeah.
12:37...tin.
12:38What would be the very best?
12:39Well, I'll just have a quick look.
12:40Yeah.
12:41It's got £15.
12:42£15.
12:42What shall we say?
12:44Um, ten?
12:46You couldn't do it for eight, could you?
12:48For you?
12:49Aw.
12:49Yeah?
12:50Shall we do that for you?
12:51Aw, yes.
12:52Shake the gentleman's hand.
12:53Thank you so much.
12:55Thank you very much.
12:55Thank you very much.
12:56Well done, Blues, as your ceramic challenge ticked off in 25 minutes.
13:02Amazing.
13:03Brilliant.
13:04Right, Ru, will the Reds be lifting that trophy?
13:07OK, folks.
13:09£225.
13:10No.
13:10It's not going to make any money.
13:11No, no, isn't it?
13:12It's not going to make any money.
13:12We'll lose 150 on it.
13:15Yeah.
13:15OK.
13:16Shall we head outside?
13:17Let's do this.
13:17Let's go, let's go, let's go.
13:19No time to waste.
13:20Bad luck.
13:21Your sporting challenge certainly seems, well, challenging.
13:24While the teens continue shopping, I'm off to look at a very entertaining collection.
13:33Let me take you back to a time when this man was entertaining the masses.
13:37Now this is where the show picks up.
13:40His name was Arthur Askey and his career spanned from the 1930s to the 1970s.
13:47He was best known for his catchphrases.
13:49Oh, yes I am.
13:54200 of his personal possessions are about to be sold at auction.
13:58And our very own Charles Hansen is the man who will be putting them under the hammer.
14:03He's brought along a few special pieces to show us.
14:06Hello Charles.
14:07Danny, hi.
14:08This is all very exciting.
14:10It is.
14:10It's not every day.
14:11What comes into a cell room is, I suppose, a collection of one of our earliest entertainers.
14:16He was from Liverpool.
14:17He was born all those years ago in June 1900 and schooled at the Liverpool Institute for Boys from 1911
14:27to 1916.
14:29I'm going to start with what is a really interesting medal in the Morocco case here.
14:34It's the medal he won for the Egg Cup race in the year 1916.
14:40Egg Cup or Egg and Spoon?
14:42No.
14:42Egg Cup.
14:43And actually, Danny, we found a brilliant clip of him talking about winning this award.
14:47Yeah, but that's not the Egg and Spoon race, you know.
14:50This combines dexterity with speed, the one I did.
14:54There were about 12 eggs laid along the field, you know, about three yards apart.
14:59And the idea was bang, off you go, you get the first egg, put it back in your cap.
15:03Go and get the second egg, put it back.
15:05And I won it against all comers.
15:07And they pointed out at the end that the reason I won, I was nearer the floor than any of
15:12the others to pick him up, you see.
15:13He was only five foot two, but of course, he was renowned for that cheeky, cheerful personality.
15:19Yes.
15:20So tell me, what was it worth?
15:22We've guided it between 50 and 100 pounds.
15:25After leaving school at 16, Askey took a desk job with Liverpool's education department.
15:31But in his spare time, his passion was performing as an entertainer in seaside towns and holiday camps.
15:37Eventually, his talent was spotted.
15:39And in 1938, he hit the big time when he appeared on the BBC's first radio comedy series, Bandwagon.
15:47So next item, Danny, is Arthur's wristwatch here.
15:50He wore it in the 1950s.
15:52Not a particularly rare watch, but of course, it's what's on the back of the watch that's really important.
15:59Namely, one of Arthur's iconic catchphrases, I thank you.
16:05Arthur was master of those catchphrases, I thank you.
16:09Yeah.
16:10Or before your very eyes or hello playmates.
16:13Hello playmates!
16:14Hello!
16:16Hello!
16:17Hello!
16:18Hello!
16:19So that really gives up provenance.
16:21Yeah.
16:22We've guided it, Danny, between 150 and 250, but it might make a lot more money.
16:27I bet it will.
16:29Askey's successful stint on Bandwagon meant that film and TV roles quickly followed,
16:34but he kept his fundamental holiday camp training.
16:37He was often seen starring in panto at the Palladium, which is where he received his plaque.
16:43When you play the Palladium, they give you these plaques with your name on, and they put them on your
16:49dressing room door,
16:50and when your engagement is finished, they mount them on wood, and they're trophies, you see.
16:56What's something like this worth?
16:58Each of these, we expect, might make between £50 and £80.
17:02Each?
17:02Each.
17:03Oh, wow.
17:04Well, Charles, this is definitely an award. What was he awarded that for?
17:07For Distinguished Service to Entertainment in the year 1974, when he had served 50 years in the entertainment industry.
17:17It was given by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne on behalf of the Grand Order of the Water Rats.
17:23The Grand Order of the Water Rats is a British charitable organisation for very much members of the entertainment industry.
17:32So, have you got many awards in the sale?
17:34Danny, there are, and particularly in that year, 1974.
17:36Of course, it was 50 years celebrating his unique input to the entertainment industry.
17:44This one, Danny, has a guide price of between £300 and £500.
17:48Well, thank you, Charles, for bringing in this wonderful collection to show us, and good luck at the auction.
17:53I thank you.
17:55You've got it.
17:57200 lots from Arthur's collection were sold at auction.
18:01Going, going, going!
18:02And they made a whopping £57,000.
18:06I thank you.
18:08Sold.
18:11Back to the shopping, and with 25 minutes left on the clock, it's 2-1 to the Blues who've bagged
18:17the kitchen table and met their ceramic challenge with a biscuit barrel.
18:21The Reds have a wine coaster and two challenges remaining.
18:25What do you think of this statue, Blues?
18:27And is she over £75?
18:29I think this bronze is beautiful.
18:32Oh, so do I.
18:33I think she's gorgeous.
18:34Yeah.
18:35Just the detailing.
18:36Do you like her?
18:38Yes.
18:39No, I do.
18:39Ooh, let's look.
18:40No, no, no, I do.
18:41Yeah, it's not necessarily something I'd have in my house, but it is a...
18:44Yeah, OK.
18:44I can recognise it's a quality piece.
18:46OK.
18:46I think she's probably not an original Art Deco bronze.
18:50Oh, OK.
18:51But she's, nonetheless, she's absolutely stunning.
18:54It does say 245.
18:57I think that's a bit much.
18:58Yeah, let's have a think.
19:00Let's keep looking.
19:00You have £237 left to spend, Helen, and you could always haggle.
19:0520 minutes left now, teams.
19:07Ah!
19:08Are the Reds about to strike it lucky?
19:10Skittles.
19:11Skittles.
19:11Now, is Skittles a team sport?
19:13Well, if there are ten of them, they're ten-pin bowling pins.
19:17It's a modern version of the pub game Skittles,
19:20which is played on a smaller alley with just nine Skittles and a smaller ball.
19:25That said, ten-pin bowling can be played as an individual or team sport,
19:30so it would meet your challenge.
19:32All right, I've got the price tag.
19:34Ooh!
19:36A set of ten, made in the USA, £150.
19:40And they're a bit bashed.
19:41They are a bit bashed.
19:42Yeah.
19:42I have bought Skittles before.
19:44Yeah.
19:44Oh, yeah.
19:44Thinking these are going to be such a cool interior designer's piece.
19:48Yeah.
19:48You put them in a bar, you put them in your man bachelor pad at home,
19:53and I got them for a really good price, and they did struggle.
19:57Yeah.
19:57Because people would say, oh, they're funky, but not necessarily bid on them.
20:00Yeah.
20:01But they would fulfil the challenge and potentially a big spend.
20:04They would.
20:05Shall we find out?
20:06There's not much we can say about them.
20:08They're not antique.
20:09They're American.
20:10They're funky.
20:11They remind us of our childhood, and they could tick a challenge box.
20:14Mmm!
20:15I think you need to get the price down to stand a chance at auction.
20:17OK.
20:18So, there's ten of them there.
20:20It says £150.
20:21Could we do a 75?
20:2375.
20:24Good one.
20:25Are you sure?
20:26Yeah.
20:27Oh, you're a good man.
20:28Thank you, thank you.
20:30Strike!
20:31That's both the team sport challenge and the big spend.
20:34Well done.
20:35Now we can get whatever we want as a third item.
20:37Fantastic.
20:39And just over 15 minutes left to find it.
20:42Going to spend big on some bling blues?
20:44Yeah.
20:45Try that on.
20:45Yeah, or that probably won't.
20:46See if it fits, madam.
20:50That's where I get it stuck on my fingers.
20:52Is that...
20:53That's gold, then, is it?
20:53That's gold, yeah.
20:54Nine carat gold.
20:56What would be your very, very best price?
20:59Er...
20:59Something.
21:00180.
21:01180.
21:03What do you think, Caroline?
21:04I think it's a little bit steep to make a profit still.
21:08But it's lovely.
21:10Is that your absolute best?
21:11It is.
21:11Yeah.
21:12OK.
21:13Sorry, it's just...
21:13No, no, don't worry.
21:16I think we'll leave it for now.
21:18The blues are struggling to splash some serious cash.
21:21Ooh, these look posh.
21:23Ooh.
21:24I like that name.
21:25Harrods.
21:25Harrods, yeah.
21:26Harrods, Harrods.
21:27OK, so what are we seeing here?
21:28So this is your quintessential almost child set.
21:32You've got your teaspoon, you've got your little fork,
21:34you've got your butter knife.
21:36And it's 1952, Sheffield silver.
21:39So Sheffield is the crown.
21:41So you know you get Birmingham silver, a lot of it at the anchor.
21:44Yeah.
21:44Sheffield is the crown, so...
21:46Nice.
21:46And actually, where it got the marks from, way back a couple of hundred years ago,
21:51there was a pub called the Crown & Anchor, and one of the heads of the Birmingham Assay Office
21:57and the Sheffield Assay Office met up to discuss the marks, went to the Crown & Anchor pub,
22:03the anchor became Birmingham, and the Sheffield became the crown.
22:07That's £50.
22:09Now, 50 grams worth of silver, a scrap is probably about £25 to £28.
22:14Yeah.
22:14OK.
22:14So that's almost double the scrap.
22:16Yeah.
22:16Do you like it, as I said?
22:18I really like it.
22:18I really like it, yeah.
22:19We bought cutlery for the girls when they were little, and...
22:22Not from Harrods.
22:23Not from Harrods.
22:24So now we can finally get some from Harrods.
22:27But it's just something quaint about it, you've got a history there.
22:31I love it's from Sheffield.
22:33And it's from Sheffield.
22:34Sheffield.
22:34Shall we speak to the dealer?
22:35Yeah.
22:36Sounds promising.
22:37Now, is this bracelet a big spend option blues?
22:41Absolute death on that, I can do £100.
22:45But these are all nice riveted pieces, so the more cut steel pieces you have per,
22:49I think it's per centimetre, the earlier it is.
22:52So this is going to be...
22:53It's late, Jordan.
22:54So you're going to be around £18, £10, £18, £20.
22:57But it is still Jordan.
22:58But it's nice because it's all original.
23:00That would sparkle beautifully in the candlelight.
23:03Exactly.
23:04That's an option.
23:04Oh, do you have any silver?
23:06Oh, that brooch is nice.
23:08There's a few.
23:08What about that Pietra Dura, which is that, and Lily of the Valley.
23:12Right.
23:13So it's hard stone Pietra Dura.
23:15It's £18, £99.
23:16It's got a nice hallmark on that.
23:17Birmingham, £18, £99.
23:19OK.
23:20And that would be worn high on a left line.
23:24Right.
23:24Oh, right.
23:25OK.
23:26Then that can be £100.
23:28That can be £100 as well.
23:29I quite like that butterfly.
23:31Caroline, what's your expert opinion?
23:34These three items all have merit.
23:37OK.
23:38This is the earliest Georgian one.
23:41Yeah.
23:42But I don't know that many people are going to want to buy that to wear it.
23:47Yes.
23:48Yeah.
23:48The butterfly's pretty, but it's not quite big enough to be.
23:53Yeah.
23:54OK.
23:54But this one, I don't know whether I'm being overly drawn to it because Lily of the Valley
24:00is my favourite flower.
24:01Oh, OK.
24:03But it's nice, it's a big piece and it's wearable today.
24:08Yeah.
24:08OK.
24:09And it's Victorian, £18, £99, fully hallmarked round the side.
24:16If I was to choose, I would definitely go for that one of the three.
24:20OK.
24:20Well, Caroline's given her verdict.
24:22Reds, can you get the Charles Christlin cutlery set down from £50?
24:27Can I ask you what your best price is for this one?
24:34£35.
24:35Oh, I don't suppose you could do £25.
24:38You couldn't do £25.
24:39No.
24:40Could £29 be doable?
24:42No, £29.
24:43£29?
24:44Shake your hand for the £29.
24:45Thank you very much.
24:46Thank you very much.
24:47You've done it, Reds.
24:48Three items bought.
24:49Well done.
24:51Shall we go maybe do some yoga out on the grass?
24:54Tea.
24:55Tea and cake.
24:56Tea and cake first.
24:57Come on, you two.
24:57Always thinking about your bellies.
25:00Save some for me.
25:01Right, Blues.
25:02Will it be the brooch, the bracelet or the butterfly?
25:05Now we have eight minutes over.
25:08OK.
25:08To be honest, I like both of those.
25:11I've gone off the butterfly since looking at that in more detail.
25:14I like, as well, the necklace with the green...
25:17The green?
25:18Yeah.
25:19160.
25:20That'll be it.
25:22OK.
25:23Mexican silver and turquoise.
25:25And turquoise.
25:26Yeah.
25:26160's the death on that, yeah.
25:27160.
25:28For me, it's between those two.
25:31Yeah.
25:31I don't love that.
25:32Me too.
25:32Right.
25:33So we'll get rid of that.
25:34Caroline, which in your opinion is likely to give us a bigger profit?
25:38Oh, I don't know.
25:40This is more money.
25:41I think there's slightly less chance of a profit on this one.
25:45Oh my goodness, this is hard.
25:47But that's the one you really love?
25:48Yeah.
25:48Yeah.
25:49If you love it, and I love it too, there will be other people.
25:54The quality's there.
25:55What do you think?
25:56The quality's there.
25:56Yeah, yeah, it is good quality.
25:57I do, I prefer...
25:59The necklace.
25:59You do?
26:00Yeah.
26:00And that is more modern altogether.
26:03Yeah.
26:03Could we go to 159 on that, just in case it gets to 160?
26:07Would you do that?
26:08Shall we do it?
26:09Yeah.
26:10I think...
26:11We haven't got much time, so...
26:13No, I know.
26:13You've got four minutes and going down.
26:15OK.
26:15You're happy with 159?
26:16Yeah, that's fine.
26:18Thank you very much.
26:19Thank you very much.
26:20Brilliant.
26:20Well done Blues at £159.
26:23That's your big spend and final buy, with minutes to spare.
26:27Sit back and relax, teams.
26:29Your shopping's over.
26:31You've done it!
26:32Yes!
26:32I didn't think we were going to do it.
26:34I know.
26:35Come on, let's go and have a lie down.
26:37Let's remind ourselves what the Red Team bought.
26:40They're hoping to toast a profit with the George V Cup glass and sterling silver wine coaster.
26:46£24 paid.
26:49To meet their team sport challenge and big spend, they bought ten bowling pins for the knockdown price of £75.
26:58And their final buy was the silver christening set bought for £29.
27:06Graham, Sarah, Rue, how did you find it?
27:09Well, stressful.
27:10It's the challenge you gave us.
27:12That's impossible.
27:13I'm not having it!
27:14I think that was a nice challenge.
27:17But you fulfilled it, didn't you?
27:18We did in the end.
27:20What's your favourite item, Graham?
27:21The silver christening set.
27:22And what do you think is going to bring in the biggest profit at auction?
27:24The cutlery set.
27:25Definitely the cutlery set.
27:44Tell me, how much did you spend?
27:47£128.
27:48Decent.
27:48That remains £172.
27:51Yeah.
27:51If you can hand that over to Rue, please.
27:53OK.
27:53There was a lot of money.
27:55What are you going to do with it, Rue?
27:56I think I'm going to buy something that plays into your passions.
28:00Ooh.
28:01Ooh.
28:01Exciting.
28:02I am.
28:02So while Rue goes off to find something that plays into their passions, let's remind ourselves
28:07what the blue team bought.
28:10First up, they laid out £55 for this drop-leaf farmhouse kitchen table.
28:16Challenged to buy a decorative ceramic item that paid just £8 for this decorative biscuit barrel.
28:22And they left their big spend to last, paying £159 for this Mexican sterling silver turquoise necklace.
28:31Helen, Nick, how was it?
28:33Amazing.
28:34Yeah, brilliant.
28:35Tremendous.
28:35Really, really enjoyed it.
28:36Yeah.
28:36Who'd have thought it was so difficult to spend a lot of money?
28:38Tell me, Helen, what was your favourite item?
28:40I think my favourite was the necklace that we bought at the end, the big spend.
28:44What do you think would bring in the biggest profit?
28:46I actually think the biscuit barrel, because we only spent £8.
28:49And Nick, what was your favourite item?
28:51My favourite item was the wooden table.
28:53I think it's got a bit of rustic charm and it'll sell well, I think.
28:57Nice.
28:57What do you think is going to bring in the biggest profit?
28:59I have to agree with my wife.
29:01I think it will be the biscuit barrel.
29:02I think we've got it for a really, really good price.
29:04How much did you spend?
29:05£222.
29:07£78 change.
29:07Right, Nick, if you can hand that over to Caroline.
29:10Thank you very much.
29:11I will.
29:12Caroline, that's a lot of money.
29:13What are you going to do with it?
29:14I think I'm going to buy a bit of furniture.
29:16Oh!
29:16You like furniture, do you?
29:17Yeah, we do.
29:18Yeah, definitely.
29:19So while Caroline heads off to buy her bonus buy, I'm heading to Derby for the auction.
29:26It's taking place at Banford with auctioneer James Lewis.
29:30£20.
29:3120 bid.
29:32Five now.
29:33Gavel is raised.
29:35Hey James, what a pleasure to be here.
29:37Well, thank you for coming.
29:38We'll kick straight off with the red.
29:39The first item that they bought was this George V cut glass and sterling silver mounted
29:45wine coaster.
29:46Yeah.
29:47What do you think of it?
29:48Yeah, it could be a wine coaster.
29:49It could be for sweets.
29:50It could be for after dinner mints.
29:52Sure.
29:52Yeah.
29:53Use it for whatever you like.
29:54It's a really nice little thing and good quality.
29:57Give us an estimate.
29:58I've put 20 to 40 on it.
29:59They paid £24.
30:01That should make a profit.
30:02Okay.
30:03The second item that they bought was this set of ten skittles.
30:07I mean, it was my challenge.
30:11Did they struggle to find something?
30:12They did, yeah.
30:13Okay.
30:13Yeah, they did.
30:14That's why they bought them.
30:15I have to say, at the end of this building, there used to be a bowling alley.
30:20Right.
30:20And when I moved in, there were dozens of these.
30:25I chucked them in the skit.
30:26Oh, I thought you made a fortune out of them.
30:28No, sadly not.
30:29Get what we can.
30:30I'll take a bit of anything on them.
30:32It was their big spend.
30:34No.
30:35No.
30:35They paid £75.
30:37Don't worry, James.
30:38If anyone can do it, you can.
30:40Right.
30:40Okay.
30:40Okay.
30:41The third and last item they bought was a George V silver christening set.
30:45What do you make of those?
30:46Yeah.
30:46I mean, it's the sort of thing that you always give to somebody else.
30:49And the box is always then, oh, thank you very much.
30:52Shut the box, put it in the drawer and never use them.
30:54Yeah.
30:54So they're always in good order and this is in really nice condition.
30:57It's solid silver, so it's got a few things going for it.
31:00£30 to £50.
31:01But they pay £29.
31:02Fine.
31:03Fine.
31:04Profit.
31:04Profit.
31:05Hard work.
31:06I need help from the heavens.
31:09Moving across to the blues.
31:11The first item that they bought was the 19th, 20th century lovely farmhouse kitchen table there.
31:17It's a good traditional antique.
31:19It just needs stripping down and a bit of waxing and it will be lovely.
31:23What's the estimate?
31:2420 to 30.
31:26Oh, they're paid £55.
31:27Oh.
31:28You might get there.
31:29Let's hope so.
31:30The next item that they bought was my challenge.
31:32It's a 19th century biscuit barrel.
31:35I mean, they normally go in big boxes and we put them in 10s and 12s and make big lots
31:39of them.
31:40People do collect biscuit barrels.
31:42This one is about 1900 in date.
31:44It's in Mari, made in Staffordshire.
31:45What's it worth?
31:46A few pounds.
31:47So, we haven't put an estimate on it, but £5, £10, something like that.
31:52Well, they paid eight.
31:52Oh, that's okay.
31:54There's no great loss there.
31:55No, indeed.
31:56And the last item that they bought, which is a Mexican sterling silver turquoise set necklace.
32:01It's stamped 925.
32:03Quite a nice thing.
32:04What do you make of it?
32:05I think it's stylish.
32:06I love Mexican silver.
32:07And when it's combined with stone as well, I think they're lovely.
32:11Give us an estimate.
32:12Come on.
32:1330 to 50.
32:14159 paid.
32:15It is lovely.
32:16I like it.
32:17Maybe I'm just being mean.
32:19Well, I hope so.
32:20Yeah.
32:20For the team's sake.
32:21So do I.
32:23Tell me, who's your money on?
32:25Blues or Reds?
32:26Oh, gosh.
32:27This is a really hard one.
32:29Blues.
32:29Blues.
32:30Well, get up on that rostrum and work your magic.
32:32Good luck.

34:52All right folks, open your eyes.
34:55Voila.
34:55Oh, it's a golf ball.
34:57It is, it is.
34:58But then, alongside the sterling silver hallmark golf ball, is a sterling silver hallmark tee
35:03that is also a propelling pencil.
35:06So, if you're a golf lover, you can write on your little card as you go around all the
35:14holes.
35:14Write your handicap down.
35:15It's the perfect present for a golf lover.
35:18So, how much do you pay for it?
35:19It cost me £49.
35:21For the two.
35:22That's amazing.
35:23What sort of profit do you think we'll make from them?
35:26Oh, goodness.
35:27I think to a golf collector, this is the perfect present.
35:30I think so.
35:31I'd like to see 60 to 80, if not more.
35:34If someone, if two people really want it, you know, as a present for someone who's golf
35:39mad, where else could you get them apart from a sterling silver golf ball?
35:42Exactly.

35:54It crosses those boundaries.
35:55£30 to £50 is what I've put on.
35:57Rue paid £49.
35:59Even though it's at the top end of the estimate, I think that's got a good chance.
36:02I think somebody's going to love that.
36:03Yeah.
36:05Well, I've spoke to the auctioneer.
36:08He likes it.

37:00One of the lots.
37:01Which one?
37:02I think the necklace we're a little bit nervous about.
37:04We love it, but I think we paid a bit much.

39:39Yeah.
39:39OK.
39:40And this is a Regency mahogany centre table.
39:45It's an apprentice piece.
39:47Now, an apprentice piece would be made in exactly the same way as a full-size piece.
39:53And I think they're just charming.
39:55This is lovely.
39:57It's had a little bit of damage on one of the legs here.
40:00OK.
40:00One of the feet has been restored there.
40:03OK.
40:03So that would make a difference.
40:05If it was all completely original, the price would be quite a lot.
40:08How much did you spend on it?
40:11£55 paid.
40:1255?
40:13Yes.

40:32When I first saw that, I got so excited.
40:36It's an apprentice piece of the most lovely quality.
40:40And I turned it over and saw that.
40:43What would it be worth if it was perfect?
40:47250 to 350 pounds.
40:49And what's your estimate of it in the condition that it's in?
40:5230 to 50.

41:02A shame about the piece of damage.
41:03Auctioneers estimate it's 30 to 50.

41:37You was at minus 65.
41:39Your final result...
41:41Minus 80.
41:43Don't say it!
41:45Don't say it!
41:51Now, that was exciting, wasn't it?
41:53It really was.
41:54Really exciting.

42:18Yes, it really did.
42:19Absolutely.
42:19But I'm sorry, with a score of minus 80, then you are the runners-up.
42:23But you've been a great sport.
42:25It's been brilliant.
42:26Brilliant.
42:27Over to the victors.
42:29Genius!
42:30I bet you can't believe it.
42:33I mean, you made profits, didn't you?
42:35What really let you down was the Skittles, but...
42:37It wasn't as bad as it could have been.
42:39Exactly.
42:40You've got it.
42:41A lot worse.
42:41That's the simple way to put it.
42:43Yeah.
42:43At the end of the day, you won.
42:45We did.
