00:00Yeah, June 1st turned into a boon.
00:02It lived up to the hype.
00:04Yeah, it was how good June 1st was, everybody.
00:07People are barely talking about the A.J. Brown trade.
00:10That's the most anticipated trade of the offseason.
00:14Ah!
00:15Total.
00:16You got upstaged.
00:17Total hold my beer moment by the Rams and the Browns yesterday.
00:20Yeah, the best thing that came out of the A.J. Brown stuff was all the memes
00:24and the gifs of Mike Vrabel celebrating with Diana Rossini.
00:28They finally got it done.
00:30One of them had to sacrifice their career for it, but they got the trade done.
00:34They got the trade the two of them have been working on for four years now.
00:37Yeah.
00:38Finally got it done.
00:39So that was good to see.
00:40Man, it was popping yesterday.
00:43You know, I found out about the Miles Garrett trade,
00:47and if some of you are just waking up and were unplugged yesterday from the sports cycle,
00:51Miles Garrett is now a Los Angeles Ram.
00:53We'll dig into all this here in just a second.
00:55I found out I get push notifications from certain people on Twitter
00:59on my phone, but when you get a tweet, like when you get a push notification,
01:03you can only see like the first few words of the tweet.
01:06Yeah.
01:07And I got a field Yates, and all it said was HOLY in all caps.
01:12And I'm like, ooh, okay, something big happened.
01:14I thought maybe it was the A.J. Brown trade.
01:16And then Miles Garrett.
01:17And you and I talked about this yesterday, Seth.
01:19I had told you that when I was doing my, you know, maybe twice a week listen in on Cleveland
01:23radio,
01:24because it was June 1st.
01:26That's why I was listening in, because they've been, those guys have been worried about them moving.
01:30I say, I won't say worried.
01:31One has been more worried than the other about them moving Miles Garrett for a long time.
01:34And then it happened.
01:37And wow, yesterday.
01:38I mean, this was a defensive player of the year getting traded as the reigning defense of the year.
01:45The all-time single-season sack record holder in the offseason after he set the record.
01:54This isn't Miles Garrett getting traded three years later just so he can go win a ring.
01:59This is Miles Garrett getting traded in his prime, like at his peak of his powers.
02:04You don't ever, I mean, this is incredible.
02:07There's a lot.
02:08Well, and the other part of it, too, that I think is, it pales in comparison,
02:13and yet it's still very, very significant.
02:15Is that Jared Vers is one of the best young edge rushers in the league,
02:20and he's still on his rookie contract.
02:23He gets traded to the Browns, and the Browns, they're not even allowed to extend his contract,
02:28so there's zero drama about that or anything.
02:30But I think my initial thought, my knee-jerk reaction was,
02:33wow, it doesn't seem like a lot of compensation to get Miles Garrett,
02:38but I think people are underselling just how good Jared Vers is
02:43and how young he is in the terms of the life cycles of the two teams
02:48where the Rams are very much built to win a Super Bowl this year.
02:51The Browns are getting back.
02:54They're getting back.
02:56Basically, I want to say it's better than a first-round pick
02:58because it's a proven first-round pick.
03:00He's still on his rookie deal.
03:01I mean, he's going to be in his third year on it,
03:04but he's still a very young player on his rookie contract who, in a lot of respects,
03:11statistically is the same guy that Miles Garrett was in his first two seasons.
03:15Garrett had more sacks, but in terms of quarterback pressures,
03:18tackles for a loss, all that stuff, he is a very imposing defensive end,
03:24and he's going to be around for a lot longer than Miles Garrett would.
03:27And I'm not saying he's going to be as good as Miles Garrett,
03:29but it makes sense for the Browns,
03:31and I think Browns fans are having a hard time acknowledging
03:33that they're probably going to be a two-win football team this year.
03:37It's the smart thing for the Browns to do in terms of building for the future.
03:41I thought it was a really good trade for the Browns
03:44because it kind of plays the middle of those two things.
03:46It's not all current players where you're a little delusional about where you are,
03:51but it's not all draft picks where it's all scratch-off lottery tickets as well.
03:56You don't know what's coming out from underneath the paint.
03:58So I thought it was good.
03:59I think it, you know, look, as you said, Jared Verse is not Miles Garrett,
04:04but he's less expensive.
04:07Do you know who Jared Verse is, at least physically and stylistically maybe not the same?
04:14But in terms of where they are in their development,
04:16a little like Will Anderson after two years.
04:18No, 100%.
04:20A little like Will Anderson in that his sack numbers don't pop for you,
04:24but he wreaks havoc.
04:27And at some point he's going to start bringing the quarterback to the ground a lot more.
04:31He's a lot like he's a, you know, where Will Anderson is a combination of power and speed,
04:37but he's, you know, as a young player, he was more on the power side of things
04:41and he's learned to balance it out a little bit.
04:43Jared Verse is on the extreme power side of things.
04:46And, but just like Will Anderson, there's, there's an element of his game
04:51where he's really good at getting close to the quarterback.
04:54Will Anderson his first couple of years, really good at getting close to the quarterback.
04:57It's just finishing where he just has to add, he has to add some polish to his game.
05:02He's stiffer than Will Anderson, but pressure rate and his win rate and all these things,
05:08they're very similar to a young Miles Garrett and, or, or a young Will Anderson.
05:13And he's, he's on that same trajectory.
05:16So Jake Lazor reported that the Rams had really wanted to make it all, all draft picks.
05:24And the Browns wouldn't budge.
05:26They wanted Jared Verse.
05:28Yep.
05:28So this is where the, I don't know if you're the Rams, the, the Ty Simpson pick,
05:36a lot of people are saying, well, okay, this makes sense.
05:38Then this is why they drafted Ty Simpson, because they knew they weren't going to have
05:41a first round pick next year.
05:44I, that doesn't quite do it for me.
05:47I feel, I still feel like, okay, you, you still also could have drafted somebody who can
05:51contribute this year and like, and, and drafted another guy.
05:56You're going to draft a Ty Simpson in the second round next year.
05:59So I, that's still a little bit curious, but the, the Rams have not acted anything like
06:06an orthodox football team and they managed to go to a couple of Super Bowls and win
06:10one of them over the last few years.
06:11They've only drafted two players prior to Ty Simpson.
06:15Yeah.
06:16They've only drafted like two players in the first round in the last decade.
06:19Like they haven't had, they've traded their first round.
06:21They trade and, and both those guys are gone.
06:23One of them was Jared Goff, who they traded to get Matt Stafford.
06:26And the other one was Jared Verse.
06:27So they just traded yesterday to get Miles Garrett.
06:30Other than that, Ty Simpson is the only first round pick the Rams have used.
06:34It's on their roster right now.
06:36And he's never played a snap for them and probably in a perfect world, he won't for
06:39a couple of years.
06:40So here are the terms of the deal.
06:42We should probably lay that out for people who have not seen them.
06:46And then we'll hear from Ian Rapoport here in just a second.
06:49The Rams get Miles Garrett.
06:51The Browns get, as we've talked about here, the first few minutes of the show, Jared
06:55Verse, really good, young, two-time Pro Bowl defensive end, who's again, just two years
07:01in.
07:01So he's still got two years and theoretically a fifth-year option left on his rookie deal.
07:06He's inexpensive for a while, which is good for the Browns because they're taking a pretty
07:10big cap hit in trading Miles Garrett because of all the bonus money that they gave him with
07:14his new deal a year ago.
07:16The Browns also get a, excuse me, a first-round pick next year in 2027, a second-round pick
07:23in 2028, a third-round pick in 2029.
07:27You asked me yesterday, Seth, you and I were texting after this deal, and you said, what do
07:30you think the Rams would have gotten for Jared Verse if they were just trading him, you
07:35know, just put him out there on the market to get draft capital themselves?
07:39And I think, to me, Jared Verse, they'd have probably gotten, I think, at least, definitely
07:44a first because he's young and inexpensive.
07:47And probably another pick, like a first and a third, first and a second, something like
07:51that, they probably would have gotten.
07:52And so if you're, you know, if this is just my opinion, if you want to look at it and
07:57translate it into draft capital, it's almost the equivalent to me of the Browns getting
08:01two firsts and then three day two picks over the next couple of years.
08:06And you know how these trades go at the upper levels.
08:08It could be all over the place, depending on how desperate anybody was.
08:11But I mean, Khalil Mack was the, Khalil Mack's was the granddaddy of all edge rusher trades.
08:17Two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and a sixth-round pick in exchange for Mack and a
08:21second-rounder.
08:25So, yeah, it was at least a first and a second.
08:27And you might, if given the right circumstances, have been able to get a couple of first-round
08:32picks for him at some point.
08:33I do.
08:34I really, I like Jared Verse a lot.
08:37I know you do.
08:37And maybe that's initially why.
08:39You know, and I went back and I just, I went through and I was doing a kind of a
08:43cut-up
08:43of his tackles for a loss and his quarterback hits yesterday.
08:46He's just so brutish.
08:49You know what I thought, Sean?
08:50It was that, you know, people love to say a bull in a China shop, and that's very much
08:55a cliche metaphor by now.
08:56He looks like a bull in a China shop who has a beef with the proprietor of the China shop.
09:01Like, it's not just a bull that's in there randomly thrashing around and everything.
09:05Yeah.
09:06Like, he looks like a bull who's in there who hates China.
09:08Yeah.
09:09Like, he's just, like, I do not, I do not like your fancy, your fancy dinnerware.
09:14He's a purposeful bull.
09:16He's, he's, he's a bull with intent.
09:18And he's, he's been trained.
09:20Yes.
09:20He's, he's, he's got intent with what he does.
09:22Yeah.
09:22He's not just flailing around like some stupid bull.
09:25No, no, he's got a plan.
09:26It looks like, he looks like, he looks like he went into that China shop because somebody
09:30in the China shop said, hey, we're, we're going to turn you into a steer.
09:34And he's like, oh, no, you are not.
09:36I just remember you leading up to the opener with the Rams last year.
09:41Yeah.
09:41And by the time the opener rolled around, I was terrified of Jared Verse because of everything
09:45you'd been saying about him.
09:46You, you, you'd been, you know, that, that was, he was what concerned you.
09:49Here was, here was Ian Rapoport of the NFL network yesterday when the Miles Garrett deal
09:57went down.
09:57The Los Angeles Rams were the team.
10:00They were the team.
10:01They were persistent.
10:02They reached out to the Cleveland Browns wanting trade for Miles Garrett around the time when
10:06the Browns adjusted Miles Garrett's contract to move some bonuses up a little bit.
10:11The Browns said, no, he is not available.
10:13Rams tried again after the draft and said, we want him.
10:16Here's more.
10:17Here's more.
10:17They said, no, he is not available.
10:19Okay.
10:20Well then they said, what if we included Jared Verse?
10:23Well, that was someone the Cleveland Browns have had eyes on for a long time.
10:26When Jared Verse was suddenly in the deal, the picks got moved around a little bit.
10:31It got to a point where the two teams said, you know what?
10:33This could actually happen.
10:35They're expected to agree in totality later today.
10:39Right now they are finalizing this deal.
10:41This absolute stunner.
10:44Miles Garrett expected to be a member of the Los Angeles Rams.
10:47The one and only team to pursue him.
10:50Persistence pays off for less need for Sean McVay and company.
10:54Just an unbelievable day.
10:57Unbelievable.
10:58Yeah.
10:58It's a huge trade.
10:59There's so many angles to this that are really, really interesting.
11:02The Browns now have, they're the opposite of the Rams.
11:05They've got a ton of draft capital.
11:06They've got 11 picks next year, including now two first-round picks.
11:10Their own and the Rams' first-round pick.
11:13So they'll have a lot of draft capital to maneuver around and get one of these quarterbacks.
11:18A ton of quarterbacks, supposedly, in this coming draft.
11:21And I'd be really stunned if that's not the direction the Browns go in when the draft rolls around next
11:27year.
11:28I don't think it's going to be Shudor Sanders that is this team, the quarterback that takes that team to
11:33the promised land.
11:34I don't think it's going to be Deshaun Watson.
11:36I do think that trading for Verse makes it equally likely that Deshaun Watson remains the number one guy.
11:44Jared Verse, the Browns had Deshaun Watson as the number one guy, and I know it's June,
11:50but as the leader in the clubhouse to start right now with Miles Garrett on the team.
11:55I'm not saying Jared versus Miles Garrett, but Jared Verse is a present-time enough move
12:00to where I don't think that they're going, well, screw it, let's put Shudor in now.
12:04It is interesting, though, too, because I wonder if they're trying to either hit a reset or tank
12:11or whatever you want to call it, are they trying to play the middle too much?
12:16Because, okay, you could have had two first-round picks.
12:21Could have.
12:23Plus for Miles Garrett.
12:25Instead, you bring in a guy who's still going to help your defense be a competitive defense.
12:30And you didn't hire a David Cully.
12:33You hired an actual coordinator.
12:35You know, you hire him.
12:36But Todd Monken wasn't the apple of everybody's eye when it came to head coach candidates.
12:41But he's also not a complete, you know, drub.
12:45It makes sense in some respects.
12:46That they might be in danger of winning too many games if what they really want to do
12:53is just set themselves up.
12:54Now, maybe they feel like, okay, look, we're not going to try to be the smartest guys in
13:00the room.
13:00We know that there's multiple quarterbacks available next year, and we'd like to have a
13:04crack at one of them.
13:05So whether they're the first pick in the draft or the eighth pick in the draft, we're going
13:09to have options.
13:09Yeah, I think the plethora of quarterbacks in this draft, supposedly, we'll see.
13:13You know how this goes.
13:14It's like every year, people are like, this is now the greatest quarterback draft class
13:17coming up this next year.
13:20And then you get to...
13:21I'm old enough to remember when Spencer Rattler was a slam dunk at all.
13:25Yeah, yeah.
13:25So these things are subject to change.
13:28I think what's interesting about that, Seth, like, okay, is this a tank?
13:32Is this a reset?
13:34Are they playing the middle?
13:35I thought about this this morning.
13:36If I'm a fan of the Cleveland Browns, this is a team and a franchise and a fan base that
13:41went through the most obvious and horrific tank of the tanking age back in 2016 and 2017
13:50when they went 1-31.
13:52They were so obviously tanking.
13:54They had brought analytics guys into the building.
13:56They were clearly building a team that was set up to lose.
13:59Yeah, they had baseball people.
14:01They had baseball people.
14:02D. Podesta was in the building.
14:04And so what did they wind up with?
14:06Because this is pertinent for this morning.
14:07What did they wind up with?
14:09Well, they wound up with the first overall pick in 2017 and the first overall pick in
14:122018.
14:13They drafted Miles Garrett in 2017 and they drafted Baker Mayfield in 2018.
14:19And those two guys are both in the league still playing at Miles at the highest level
14:23and Baker Mayfield at a high enough level where he's way better than anything you got
14:27at quarterback right now.
14:29That's what you got out of your tank.
14:30And they're both playing high-level football for other teams now.
14:34So if I'm a Browns fan, I'm like, no, no, no.
14:36I've been through this.
14:37We're going to suck.
14:38But I've been through the intentional suck before.
14:40And all we're doing is feeding other teams the good players that we got from that tank.
14:45Right?
14:46Yeah, yeah.
14:47So it's relevant this morning.
14:50And part of it, too, is that, all right, I guess if you're a Browns fan, you look at
14:56the whole Deshaun Watson scenario.
14:58And I think, what's the general narrative on that now, that that was completely owner-driven,
15:04that Andrew wouldn't have done it if the owner wasn't goading him to?
15:10The narrative on it definitely has Jimmy Haslam's fingerprints on it.
15:15Ultimately, it's going to be an Andrew Barry's ticket, which was another big topic yesterday,
15:18was Andrew Barry is now going to be known as the guy who traded for Deshaun Watson and
15:23traded away Miles Garrett.
15:25He's the GM that did both of those things.
15:27And so we'll see how it plays out.
15:28And then with the Rams, the Rams, who are already a Super Bowl favorite going into this,
15:32their odds improved even after they were already the favorites.
15:37The interesting thing about that is, all right, usually an edge rusher doesn't necessarily
15:41move the needle that much no matter how good he is.
15:44But if you look at the sum total of what they've done on their defense last year, they added
15:49Trent McDuffie.
15:50They add Miles Garrett.
15:52They look very much like you're covered on both ends in terms of the pass rush.
15:55Because remember, they've got five viable, impressive pass rushers on that defensive
16:01line.
16:02They swapped Jared Burse out for Miles Garrett.
16:05But I guess the one hanging issue is a little bit that the Rams special teams were atrocious
16:12last year.
16:13And people don't like talking about special teams, but special teams are probably what
16:17cost them home field advantage and ultimately lost them the real Super Bowl, which was the
16:22Seahawks versus the Rams.
16:23Yep, yep, yep.
16:24That's, you're right, you're 100% right about it.
16:27They fired their special teams coach in the middle of the season last year.
16:31So they were really bad.
16:33For non, usually if a special teams coach gets fired in the middle of the season, it's
16:37because he got caught drunk driving with a hooker or something.
16:41Like, no, this was performance-based.
16:43No, their special teams were, special teams looked like they were drunk driving with a
16:47hooker.
16:48Yeah, the Rams down from seven and a half to one to six to one to win the Super Bowl.
16:53Miles Garrett, odds on winning defensive player of the year went down also.
16:57He was almost five to one.
16:58He's now four to one.
16:59So that's, yeah, big trade yesterday, man, big trade.
17:04And you know what was nice to see, Seth?
17:05The report on ESPN about it, the article that I linked in the rundown.
17:11Um, I looked, I'm like, okay, who wrote this?
17:14Is it Schefter?
17:15Schefter, Rapoport, and Pellicero, who all live under one roof now.
17:19The NFL Network and ESPN, they, the three big nugget hussies all combining on an article
17:24together.
17:25If anybody was worried about whether the NFL and the people who cover, cover it would
17:30be, uh, no, they wouldn't be cozy enough.
17:32Kumbaya.
17:33Don't worry.
17:33They're, they're cozier than ever.
17:35Hands held.
17:38Simpatico putting this article together.
17:40If there was anybody that was worried, like, Hey, could they, boy, could the NFL really
17:44control the narrative on a lot of stuff now?
17:46Uh, I'm worried that they're not going to be able to do that enough.
17:50Oh yeah.
17:50Yeah.
17:50Yeah.
17:51They got that covered.
17:52Today, today's your, today's your day.
17:54Absolutely.
