Transcript
00:00one of the songs on the record is like a real love song um just i kind of tried and
00:04true it
00:05sort of reminds me of a song that people would play at their weddings hopefully and um it was
00:08the first time i've i've written a song like that that is just a pure romantic love joyful vibes
00:15and uh i i think that was a fun creative challenge for me as a songwriter to do something like
00:18that
00:20this is your odyssey check-in with olivia rodrigo we're here at the hard rock hotel new york in the
00:26rock star sweet yeah it's kind of sweet here i love it i know sweet good digs good digs um
00:32so so
00:32much is going on with you um you you just dropped a new new song the cure and i've heard
00:38it's very
00:39special to you why is that yeah it's my favorite song on the album i think it's sort of the
00:45thesis
00:45statement of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love it's just sort of about me realizing that
00:50you
00:50know love doesn't solve all your problems which i sort of thought that it would when i was younger
00:54and it took me a long time to come to that realization and so writing the song about it
00:57felt like a real moment of catharsis and like self-growth and um i really i just i just love
01:04it it really moves me so not on the like engineering side of it but what was the final
01:09touch you put on it where you were like okay this is complete now god i think the last thing
01:15we did
01:15the the i'm unraveled parts there's one part where i like scream like i'm unraveled i kept wanting
01:19it to be louder and more screamy so i screamed i screamed it i scrimped it is what i was
01:24gonna say
01:24i screamed it uh a few times um and uh couldn't quite get it right but then finally landed on
01:30the
01:30right one did you need to like go horse a little bit like have a rasp to it or what
01:34was the sometimes
01:35it is good to like not be in like great vocal health when you're recording those songs because
01:39it feels like a little raspy and like rock star or something like that yeah yeah don't show this to
01:43my voice teacher but yeah sometimes it's nice outside of the cure what's um a song that uh really
01:50took you out of your comfort zone on the album you don't have to drop the title if you don't
01:53want you
01:54could just tell me like how it took you outside of the box one of the songs on the record
01:59is like a
01:59real love song um that's i kind of tried and true it sort of reminds me of a song that
02:03people would
02:04play at their weddings hopefully and um it was the first time i've i've written a song like that that
02:08is just like pure romantic love joyful vibes and uh i i think that was a fun creative challenge for
02:15me as a songwriter to do something like that so very cool what's your um trash verse keep ratio when
02:21you're working on stuff like do you abandon uh songs a lot or pieces of songs or do they usually
02:27find their way into a full song i trash so many songs i'm the ultimate trasher see as a fan
02:33that's
02:34very upsetting why no no you don't want to hear them you don't want to hear them uh i i
02:38just write
02:39a lot like because it helps me feel sane okay and um yeah i'm more of like a quantity over
02:45quality
02:46person with the songwriting sometimes i just think it's important to like get stuff out there and like
02:49keep that creative tap flowing and show the universe that you're like they're like open for
02:53ideas so yeah i've trashed a lot of songs in the making of this record wow wow i i know
02:58you said um
02:59one of the sex in the city episodes inspired a song does that happen often where you're watching
03:05like a movie or a show and you're like i could write something about this yeah i mean i get
03:09inspiration for songs from like random places i get a lot of inspiration from like conversations
03:13that i'll be having with my friends i think a few of the songs you're about to write about alcatraz
03:17now yeah yeah we're just talking about alcatraz i know the next album it's like oh were they eating
03:21five sharks did they survive um i uh yeah i get inspiration from random places all the time
03:29from like books and friends and movies and it's just you never know you always gotta like keep
03:34your eyes open and see where the when the inspiration wants to strike is there a movie or
03:39show you constantly quote within your friend group oh that's a great question sex in the city
03:45also quote pen 15 a lot i don't know have you watched pen 15 i don't think so oh my
03:49god you have
03:49to watch it it's amazing um me and my best friend maddie we always we always say that we're the
03:53two
03:53kids they're like two best friends the show is basically like two adult women who are playing
03:57girls in middle school and then all the rest of the kids are middle schoolers but they're like
04:00adult women and they're pretending to be young and it's just the funniest things it sounds like
04:03it wouldn't work but it is the most brilliant thing ever i think you should watch it but yeah
04:07unabashed pen 15 plug here okay is there a song you find yourself um revisiting the the most
04:15frequently from your catalog maybe it's like well i'm never gonna top the writing on
04:19this song or it's a song where you're like had i just tweaked these two little parts here it would
04:25have elevated it this much is there a song you revisit a lot gosh with like a critical ear i
04:31try
04:31not to i think when i listen back to my my last two albums i just like picture what it
04:36was like to
04:36be that age at the time it's like a really just the time capsule and i just have like compassion
04:40and
04:40like love for that that part of myself but anytime i'm making a record i like to i obviously you
04:47like doubt yourself and you're like get really insecure and there's always like a few songs on
04:50the record that i'll like listen to and be like oh yeah i can write a song like the ones
04:54that are
04:54like what's the confidence builder what's the i'm amazing song um oh gosh i don't know if i go that
05:00far but whenever i listen to the cure i i'm being like okay yeah i can i can finish this
05:04record like
05:04i can do it i know where this is supposed to be and good i think the last song in
05:07the record too
05:08is a song that i really like and i always keep coming back to so i love that um before
05:13we wrap if you
05:14could remember what what felt the most foreign to you maybe when you were getting started was it the
05:20writing process the recording process or the the performing process like what do you what do you
05:26feel like you had to work the hardest to become good at for sure performing i mean i driver's
05:31since came out and i really had no experience under my belt as far as touring or playing shows i
05:36think
05:36my first performance of driver's license was on the brits and then the second was on snl was like
05:41two like the biggest performances you could have it's so insane and thank god i don't know how i
05:45got through it i think if i had to do that now i'd be a ball of anxiety but when
05:48you're 17 you're just
05:48like cool i'm gonna be at the brits like you just kind of are a little you don't know what
05:53you don't
05:53know yeah yeah yeah um but i definitely had to to do a lot of practice uh performing and uh
05:59i just
06:00recently started i guess feeling pretty comfortable in myself on stage so it took it took some time yeah well
06:04you are wonderful we love you and that's a wrap thank you so much for coming by and we're so
06:09excited for
06:10everything i know tune into our podcast about alcatraz next
06:13coming soon
