00:17Thank you very much
00:31Well good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio
00:34Now today is the last quarterfinal match in series 78 in the finals
00:39Fantastic, just one more spot in the semis to be decided
00:43It's also the 40th anniversary, Rachel, of Garfield
00:48A very famous cat
00:50Now I'm not a particularly keen cat person, I know you are
00:53But I wonder whether you follow Garfield
00:55He first came to light in a syndicated strip back in 78, 40 years ago
01:01How about that?
01:02And today this cat, drawn by Jim Davis or invented by him
01:07I'm sure he has his own character now
01:10Is syndicated to over 2,500 newspapers and all the rest of it
01:14Wow
01:14Films, animated cartoons, all sorts of things
01:18But what really impresses me is this 40-year-old cat
01:23Earns a billion dollars a year
01:26Wow
01:27I suppose every day, 2,500 media outlets, you know, carry him
01:32And it's worth a few quid, as they say
01:35Amazing, isn't it?
01:36Oh, I wonder that the papers are struggling
01:38If they're paying Garfield a billion dollars
01:40Just a little Garfield
01:42I know
01:42Thanks very much

12:51Phil.
12:51It's actually the same way.
12:53Spot on.
12:54Well done.
12:58Well done.
12:59So 59 to 17, Paul on 17, as we turn to Helen.
13:03Helen, what have you been up to recently?
13:06So my recent madcap thing that I agreed to do was for the London Air Ambulance.
13:13And the London Air Ambulance, you know, work where I live in the city,
13:18and they are funded by donations.
13:20So it costs 10 million a year to keep the helicopters in the air.
13:23And it's really hard when somebody tells you that and then asks if you'll do an abseil down the side
13:28of the Royal London Hospital,
13:29which is where their helipad is, you know, to sort of, you know, help them raise more funds, etc.
13:35It's very, very difficult to say no.
13:36So, of course, I said yes and found out on the day I was doing it with Tim Vincent,
13:41who I'm sure everybody remembers from Blue Peter days and now works at NBC as an entertainment correspondent.
13:47So the Royal London Hospital is 101 metres high.
13:51I think it's the second tallest hospital in London and the helipad's on the top.
13:56But it's getting yourself in position just over the top where you realise you then just have to go.
14:02And we weren't allowed to put our feet on the windows because it's all glass.
14:07Sure.
14:07So you do spin a little bit and then you get down seconds later and then you're sort of best
14:12mates and, you know, me and Tim were like that now.
14:15Well, good for you. It's a brave old thing to do.
14:18But as you say, you know, the London's Air Ambulance, they're brilliant.
14:22They land in the street and so forth.
14:25Is it right, do you think, that it should be supported, in fact, really funded by public subscriptions?
14:32It's a bit like the lifeboats.
14:33I know.
14:34Is it not the case there also?
14:35It surprised me when I found out that they are funded by donations.
14:39They're great people and I'm looking forward to doing it again in the autumn.
14:43Well, you certainly did your bit anyway. Well done.
14:50Thanks, Helen.
14:51So, Phil, 59, Paul on 17.

16:30The sad thing when Phil asked for an S, I actually wrote that down.
16:33Yeah, sorry.
16:33We didn't get the S, did we?
16:35Violated was there.
16:36And I think, like a previous game, actually, Dovetail was also there for another eight.
16:41Excellent.
16:42Now, Paul.

18:17Very, very good.

18:20Surprisingly.
18:21But I tell you what, it's an important score.
18:2332 now against Phil's 59.
18:26But over in the corner.
18:27I think it was a tricky one, actually, don't you?
18:30It was, yes.
18:30And you beat us, actually, there, Paul.
18:33We had Torp and Roque as well to strike another ball with one's own.
18:37I think in bowls.
18:38Yeah.
18:38But couldn't get beyond six for us.
18:41As I say, 59 plays 32.
18:43And, Phil, your numbers game.
18:46Two from the top and four small, please.
18:49A two large, four little.
18:50See if the comeback continues.

20:43I left with a clue.
20:43There's a lot of people who think they're a great singer
20:46when doing this.
20:49When showering, apparently.
20:51Do you sing in the shower?
20:52It's been known.
20:55Do you have a special song?
20:57Oh, anything.

22:35It's pronounced excellent.
22:35Yes.
22:36It's the extreme sport, really.
22:38It's moving through an urban environment,
22:41jumping fences, overcoming obstacles, etc.
22:44Oh, I've seen you.
22:46I've seen you do.
22:48Parkour.

24:07Yes. I've got a seven.
24:09A seven. And Paul?
24:11Sadly, just six.
24:13And your six is?
24:16What Rachel does in the shower, belted out a song.
24:18LAUGHTER
24:20Phil.
24:21I've got it wrong, because I've used two ends.
24:23I had lenient.
24:24Oh.
24:25Wow.
24:26Sorry.
24:27Wow, wow, wow. That makes a difference.
24:30Phil, up to 55 now.
24:33In the corner.
24:34How did you do?
24:35Oh, I think probably just sixes.
24:38Edible for six.
24:40Yep, and I had an edible mushroom called a blue-it.
24:44That's another six.
24:45Well done. Well done.
24:46Well done, poor bad luck, Phil.
24:48That was a slip.
24:52Susie, your origins of words.
24:55We wait with baited breath.
24:56What have you for us today?
24:57Well, baited has got appropriate, actually, Nick,
24:59because I had an email in from David Piper,
25:01who asks for the origin of some of the many animal sayings
25:05and why do we use them.
25:07And he lists quite a few.
25:10I'll start with why we use them.
25:12If you look back to medieval bestries,
25:14you'll see that for a very long time
25:15we've associated particular animals
25:17with certain kinds of human characteristics.
25:19And these bestries were richly illuminated books
25:22showing animals,
25:24usually with some sort of moral lesson
25:25attached to their behaviour.
25:28And it's been like that for a very, very long time.
25:30And that slightly explains
25:32why we have so many idiomatic expressions
25:34in English to do with animals.
25:36And you mentioned baited breath.
25:38Badgered to death is one of the ones
25:40that David mentions.
25:42And it's not quite, as you might expect,
25:44it's not the badger that's actually doing
25:46the pestering or the attacking,
25:48but rather the dogs used in badger baiting.
25:50That extremely cruel sport, thankfully illegal now.
25:53Now, crocodile tears is another one
25:55that David mentions.
25:57That's from an ancient legend
25:58that crocodiles feel remorse
26:00when they're eating their prey.
26:02In fact, they do shed tears,
26:03but it's a natural process.
26:05It's a physical act of blowing out
26:06when they are eating.
26:08So nothing, we think, to do with anguish or regret.
26:12And finally, David also mentions guinea pig.
26:14Why do we call a test subject a guinea pig?
26:17Again, fairly straightforward.
26:18Nowadays, we talk about lab rats,
26:20but actually, years ago,
26:22they did indeed use to use guinea pigs
26:24for animal experiments.
26:26First sort of idea of this
26:27that we have in the Oxford English Dictionary
26:28is from George Bernard Shaw,
26:30who talks about education and says,
26:32the folly which sees in the child
26:34nothing more than the vivisector
26:35sees in a guinea pig.
26:37But thanks, David, for his email.
26:39But it probably goes all the way back
26:41to the medieval bestries
26:42and maybe even further still.
26:44Selma O'Donnell.
26:50Wonderful.
26:51Thank you, Susie.
26:53Now, Paul, we're back with the letters.
