The Northern Territory's Child Protection Minister is set to announce the scope of a review into the NT's child protection system today, following the death of Kumanjayi Little Baby in Alice Springs.

00:02Well, last week, the NT's Child Protection Minister, Robin Carl,
00:06confirmed that three child protection workers had been stood down
00:11following an internal investigation into the circumstances
00:15of Kumanjai little baby prior to her alleged abduction
00:20and murder in Alice Springs.
00:22Now, Ms Carl said that the government was not prepared
00:26to accept the status quo and would be announcing
00:30an independent review today.
00:33It's expected that the scope of that review will be announced
00:38by the government.
00:39Now, last week, Ms Carl said that every child
00:42in the Northern Territory deserved to be safe
00:46and that the government needed to get to the bottom
00:48of what's wrong with the child protection system
00:51here in the Northern Territory.
00:53The investigation is set to look into the culture
00:57and also the resources within the NT Child Protection Department.
01:03It's due to be conducted by an expert
01:07of both domestic violence and child protection.
01:11And what's been the reaction?
01:14Well, the federal member for the NT seat of Lingiari here,
01:19Marion Scrimgeour, said that she supported the move
01:23for this NT review, saying that there needs to be a look
01:28at the system's failures.
01:31She's also said that there are some uncomfortable truths
01:35that can't be walked away from here.
01:38Now, Sue Ann Hunter, the National Commissioner
01:41for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children,
01:45has said actually a wider response than this NT review is needed
01:51and that the NT review alone will not create structural change.
01:57She's also said that every Indigenous child should be born
02:02with the right to safety.
