00:03The following program is brought to you in Living Color on NBC.
00:31Freddie, I'm homesick.
00:35Did you buy me a drink?
00:36Me buy you a drink?
00:38Your job's hustling drinks from the customers.
00:40But I've been trying. I can't get anybody to buy me anything.
00:43Maybe if you'd stop crying in their beer all the time about being homesick, you'd make out better.
00:50It's a long walk back to Memphis, Tennessee.
00:58You'd throw me out in the street, wouldn't you?
01:03Your cut on them drinks is what we're going to have to eat on tonight.
01:10Haven't been able to start a game all day.
01:21Go in and get me a beer.
01:23I'll go in here and see Dave Sullivan.
01:25Right.
01:34Shari, those boys just coming in.
01:36The Cartwrights. They're on a big ranch. Keep busy.
01:41The young one is just a baby.
01:44So sell them milk. As long as you get your cut.
01:52Howdy, boys, and welcome.
01:54My name's Shari Bell.
01:57You can call me Shari.
02:00Pleased to meet you. I'm Adam Cartwright. This is my brother, Joe.
02:02Howdy, dude.
02:03That's my pleasure, ma'am.
02:05Wouldn't you like to have a drink with us?
02:08Why, thank you. I believe I might just do that.
02:12Hey, Dave, let me have four beers. Hustle will be along in a minute.
02:16My turn to pay, isn't it?
02:17No, I've got it.
02:20Let's play blackjack.
02:22And win enough to buy champagne.
02:24Is the only thing you ever drink champagne?
02:26Oh, you'll have to catch me to get your dollar back.
02:30Oh, honey, I'm going to catch you. You can bet on that.
02:39I'm sorry. I didn't know you were there.
02:45Now, I'm trying to apologize like a lady.
02:48The least you can do is...
02:50Will you let go of my arm?
02:51Ow!
02:52Ouch!
02:53Take your hands off of me. You're hurting my arm.
02:55Will you let go of me?
02:57Let go of me, you big ape!
03:00You're the ugliest man I've ever seen!
03:30You're the ugliest man who's still there and we've been down on the train a倒ic.
03:32You're the ugliest man who's still there, and we're seen.
03:38Oh, the nieve of mine.
04:01You got something to say to me?
04:05I don't know what I mean.
04:19Whiskey.
04:21Well, I got money.
04:26Don't suppose he's human.
04:29Well, I'm not fixing to find out.
04:35You don't have to.
04:38Well, he's a customer, and customers are my business.
04:42Yeah, Sherry, better not. I don't think it's a good idea.
04:44Well, maybe he'll buy me some champagne.
04:48Hey!
04:51Big man!
04:56Buy me a drink?
05:00Well, I like big men.
05:07Even if they are uglier than sin.
05:17I don't especially like them stupid.
05:36Why'd you call me that?
05:39Look, uh...
05:40The lady didn't mean anything by that.
05:42Why'd you say that to me?
05:44I'd like to apologize for the lady.
05:47Well, I ain't talking to you.
05:49Look, if you don't accept an honest apology,
05:52why don't you go back to the bar and forget it.
06:09I'll kill you.
06:11Oh!
06:16Oh, my God.
06:44Oh, my God.
07:25Oh, my God.
07:46One hour and 15 minutes, and ain't even moved the last 10.
07:59I'm sure getting tired.
08:01How about you?
08:04What are we fighting about, do you know?
08:07I don't know.
08:23You know, you're dang near as strong as I am, and you smell nearly as bad, too.
08:38You don't suppose they've done something to their heads, do you?
08:48Oh, my goodness.
08:49Two great big boys like you fighting over a little thing like me.
08:54Gracious.
08:55What a body think you'd have better sense.
08:58Now, if it isn't flapping, of course, you understand, but my goodness, where did you get those shoulders?
09:07Boy, Arnie, I swear, I know some mules would like to be able to kick as hard as you can
09:11hit.
09:11Boys, please, you're making me all butterflies inside.
09:19All that trouble over little me.
09:24Uh, name's Sheriff Bell.
09:26You can call me Sheriff.
09:29Sheriff Bell.
09:31Now, ain't that a pretty name?
09:33Now, ain't that a pretty name, Hoss?
09:37Yeah, that's a real pretty name.
09:40Hoss, we gotta get moving.
09:42Pa's probably waiting supper for us.
09:45Arnie, these are my brothers.
09:46This is Adam and little Joe.
09:49Hi, Arnie.
09:53Purdy, ain't they?
09:56Well, they're not, they're not really as bad as they seem.
10:01You fellas go, me and Arnie's got some talking we gotta do.
10:04Now, Hoss, haven't we lost enough time on this already?
10:08Go now.
10:15They don't like me.
10:18Well, you, you learn to like one another once you get acquainted.
10:24There.
10:25I bet that didn't hurt you a bit, did it?
10:29Hurt me?
10:31No, ma'am.
10:33I've never seen anyone with such big muscles.
10:39Well, I sure hope Hoss knows what he's doing.
10:42Ah, you know, he's always picking up stray critters, bringing them home, patching them up.
10:48Remember that grizzly cub he found up on the Tahoe Rim?
10:50Yeah, well, that was just a cub.
10:52This time he's got himself a full-grown bear.
11:13This is it, Hoss.
11:16Arnie, this is where you live?
11:17Oh, it's got a good roof on it.
11:20Yeah.
11:24Well, I got you home in one piece, anyhow.
11:27Hoss?
11:28Yeah, Arnie?
11:30Wasn't she the prettiest?
11:32The prettiest girl you ever did see?
11:35I ain't never seen nothing like her.
11:39That's her job, being nice to folks, Arnie.
11:41I wouldn't give her too much credit.
11:43Oh, no, Hoss.
11:44She can't help being nice.
11:45I can tell.
11:47I'd like to see her some more.
11:50Arnie, you don't think for one minute that...
11:55Well, what I'm trying to say is...
11:59Arnie, girls like Sherry Bell, they ain't interested in a man unless he's got money.
12:03Well, I've got some money.
12:05A feller...
12:06A feller give it to me.
12:08What feller?
12:10Some feller.
12:12I don't know who he was.
12:13I forget.
12:19Look here, let's get you out of here and get you into a room and house somewhere.
12:23I don't want that.
12:25I don't like houses much.
12:27Arnie, you can't just live here.
12:31This is a good place.
12:32There ain't nobody else around.
12:38Hoss?
12:40You're my friend.
12:42Ain't you, Hoss?
12:44Sure I am, Arnie.
12:50You ever have a friend before?
12:53Sure I have.
12:55Well, I was raised with my brothers, Arnie.
12:58Brothers is different.
13:01I never had a friend before.
13:05Of course you have, Arnie.
13:06No, I didn't.
13:07You know why.
13:09People get scared of me.
13:11People just take one look and they don't like me.
13:14Well, I like you.
13:16I took more than one look at you.
13:20Maybe you're a little more like me.
13:26Your brothers, they just took one look.
13:30I can tell.
13:31I've always been able to tell.
13:33Well, I don't blame nobody.
13:37Well, I ain't exactly a palomino myself.
13:41Looks don't mean everything, Arnie.
13:44I guess I ain't too smart, too.
13:48People don't leave me alone.
13:51Well, I get mad sometimes.
13:54I ought to be used to it, but...
13:56Well, I get mad.
14:06What I need is money, Hoss.
14:12It's gonna take a lot of money.
14:15What's gonna take a lot of money?
14:17My farm.
14:19I used to live on a farm.
14:22You ever live on a farm, Hoss?
14:25Yeah, I guess I sort of live on a farm now.
14:30Yeah?
14:33Ain't nothing like a farm.
14:35I used to get up real early in the morning
14:38and go out and slop the pigs.
14:41A whole bunch of little old baby pigs.
14:47They ain't hardly got no hair tall.
14:49Just a squealing and a-eating away
14:52and that old sow standing over
14:55and making sure every one of her little babies
14:57gets enough to eat.
15:02How come pigs is better than people?
15:05You really liked it back there, didn't you, Arnie?
15:07They ain't nothing like a farm.
15:12When I get my farm,
15:13ain't gonna be nobody mean on it.
15:15I'm gonna have cows and pigs
15:19and maybe even some sheep
15:21and they all gonna get along good together
15:24and just them animals and me
15:27and maybe...
15:30maybe somebody else.
15:33How'd you like to come out
15:34and go to work on my place?
15:36The Ponderosa.
15:39Well, what'll your brothers say?
15:41They ain't got nothing to do with it.
15:42It's up to me.
15:44Me and my Paul.
15:48I could make some money.
15:52Hoss,
15:54you think Sherry Bell
15:56would like me
15:58if I was making some money?
16:02I wouldn't count on it too much, Arnie.
16:06That Sherry Bell,
16:07she's a funny girl.
16:18Well, that's the way I feel
16:24and I know Adam will back me up all the way.
16:26That's right, I do.
16:26I'm sorry, Hoss.
16:27Now, wait a minute.
16:28There ain't nothing wrong with Arnie.
16:30He's just a great, big, strong man.
16:32He ain't too smart, that's true,
16:33but that don't mean he can't do a job.
16:35I'd just as soon have a wild animal working for me.
16:38He's strong as a bull
16:39and just as dangerous.
16:40You can't trust him.
16:41That ain't true, Adam.
16:42You don't mean no harm, Paul.
16:43You don't mean no harm?
16:44I just won't be able to use my jaw for a week.
16:46Well, that'll be a relief.
16:47All you do with it is jaw anyway.
16:48Come on, the sun's up.
16:49We got work to do.
16:55Just remember, Hoss,
16:57we didn't do anything to make him that mad.
16:59If you hadn't come along when you did,
17:01he might have killed somebody.
17:19What about it, Hoss?
17:30Is that the way it was?
17:33Well, it wasn't all that bad, Paul.
17:36Sounds as though it were.
17:38Why do you want to get mixed up with somebody like that?
17:41I guess I just understand him.
17:45I sort of put myself in his shoes.
17:49When you're as big as Arnie and me, Paul,
17:55there's some things he's got to learn, Paul,
17:57some things that I learned.
17:58Don't you think he'd be better off
18:00learning those things by himself,
18:02the way you did?
18:02Paul, I didn't learn them by myself.
18:05I had you
18:06and little Joe and Adam to back me up.
18:11Arnie ain't got nobody, Paul.
18:13You mean he needs a friend?
18:16He's got a friend, Paul.
18:20A man like Arnie just can't afford
18:22to go around losing his temper
18:23like ordinary folks.
18:25He's got to learn to put up
18:26with a little teasing,
18:28sometimes even from a girl's.
18:31He needs me, Paul,
18:32to help him learn those things.
18:36Can you teach him to control his temper?
18:38I won't stand for any troublemaking.
18:41Oh, Paul,
18:41Arnie ain't going to start no trouble.
18:44He's pretty good at ending it.
18:47Well, all right.
18:50We can always use a good hand
18:52of the Ponderosa.
18:54Thanks, Paul.
18:55As soon as I finish work,
18:56I'll go into Virginia and get him.

31:47Oh, it'll pass before you know it.
31:49Anyhow, while you're waitin', I want you to come take a ride with me.
31:51There's somethin' I wanna show you.
31:52Well, what is it?
31:53Well, I can't tell you.
31:54I gotta show you.
31:58Well, where are we goin'?
32:00Up to the Tahoe Rail.
32:02It's sort of a favorite place of mine.
32:07Then can't I come back and give Sherry Bell her present?
32:10A promise?
32:12He still won't.
32:13Thank you, friend.
33:04Take a look at that, honey.
33:10Pretty, eh?
33:19I wish I was a tree a-growing here, so I couldn't never move away.
33:27There's a little place all the way across the lake over there, about 150 acres I make it.
33:32Seems almost a shame to waste it on cattle.
33:36Sure would make a fine farm.
33:39Good meadow, water, fine standard timber.
33:45It wouldn't take too much for a man to buy it, neither.
33:47Well, who owns it, Hoss?
33:49Well, I do right now, but...
33:52Arnie, you could own it in a couple of years if you'd work real hard and save you money.
33:57Oh, it's prettier than I even ever did dream it could be.
34:04A little old cabin over there.
34:07Some roses.
34:10Well, I don't know one flower from another, but Sherry Bell likes roses.
34:28Arnie, come here and set up.
34:35Arnie, I spend a great little time up here.
34:39This is grizzly country.
34:41Old big grizzly.
34:42He likes it up here where the air is clean.
34:45He can live and hunt like a grizzly is supposed to.
34:52He likes it by himself because he don't need nobody else.
34:57But you get down lower, you get into the wolf country.
35:03The wolf travels in a pack.
35:06He'll track down a herd of deer and cut out the weak ones and tear them down.
35:17The sick ones.
35:19The old deers that can't run no more.
35:23People are sort of like that, Arnie.
35:25There's them that, like the wolf, they run in packs.
35:30And then there's others that, like the grizzly,
35:33they like to get up in the country where the air is clean.
35:37They can make their own way because they don't need nobody else.
35:47Arnie, me and you,
35:50we're bears.
35:51We ain't wolves.
35:54I don't understand you, Hoss.
36:01Arnie, I don't want you to go back into Virginia City.
36:03Tonight or no other time.
36:05But I've got to.
36:07I've got to give Sherry Bell my present.
36:11Arnie, you can have that land over there.
36:13You can have it tomorrow, but that girl don't go with it.
36:16You can move on your farm.
36:18Now, if you'll promise me you'll never see that girl again.
36:23You want her, that's what it is.
36:26Now, Arnie, wait a minute.
36:27You want her yourself.
36:29You call yourself a friend of mine.
36:31Arnie, don't you understand?
36:32She don't care nothing about you.
36:33She's been laughing at you all along.
36:35You're a liar.
36:36Arnie, I swear it.
36:37She's been making fun of you, Arnie.
36:39She admitted it to me.
36:40You're trying to make me believe something, but it ain't true.
36:43I'm going into Virginia City and get it right now.
36:46Arnie, wait a minute.
36:51You said you was my friend, but you ain't.
36:57Hoss?
37:01Don't you understand, Hoss?
37:03I ain't never had a girl before.
37:10I ain't never had a girl.
37:21Arnie!
37:30Arnie?
37:34Arnie!

39:30Sherry? Sherry?
39:45Help? Somebody help?
39:51Help!
39:52Help!
39:53But be careful. He's big enough to tear a man in two.
39:56I believe I'd as soon see him brought back dead as alive.
39:59Yeah. I shoved that door open.
40:01I saw Arnie standing there like an ape or something.
40:04Sherry Bell laying on the floor like a broken doll.
40:07Arnie took one look at me, let out a roar, yelled he was going to kill me.
40:10You boys know I'm no hero or anything.
40:11He's about twice as big as I am, but I tried to stop him anyways.
40:15And there's the man who's responsible for all of this, Hoss Cartwright.
40:18If it hadn't been for Hoss Cartwright, Sherry Bell would be alive right now.
40:21Now, that's just about enough of that.
40:23Maybe the Cartwrights did make a mistake by giving that man a job.
40:25But it was an honest mistake.
40:27Where's Arnie?
40:28Oh.
40:29Hoss, if you know where he is, tell us.
40:31He killed a girl last night.
40:35And you're riding after him?
40:36He worked for us. We have a responsibility.
40:39It's all my fault, Paul.
40:41No, it wasn't your fault you tried to help him.
40:43Hoss, do you know where he is?
40:48I ain't for sure. I know where he might be.
40:51I'll tell you where it is, Paul, but you've got to promise to give me a head start.
40:54Why?
40:55Because I've got to see him.
40:57I've got to try to explain before they get to him.
41:00Look at him. They'll tear him apart.
41:02Hoss, you can't let him go.
41:04He has to be punished.
41:05If you try to get in between him and the posse, they'll tear you apart, too.
41:09Yes, sir.
41:10I know what's got to happen, but he's my friend, Paul.
41:15I don't know what I'm going to do, but I can't just leave him out there to die all alone.
41:21Where is he?
41:25He's at Granite's Point on the rim.
41:27At least I think he is.
41:31All right.
41:33You go to him.
41:34Hoss.
41:36Be careful.
41:37Thank you, Paul.
41:44We're about ready, Ben.
41:46That's Hoss caught right riding down the street.
41:48I want to know where he's going.
41:49Will you shut up?
41:54Ben, where is Hoss going?
41:57Well, why do you want to know, Roy?
41:59You ain't letting him get the jump on us so as he can warn that Arnie, are you?
42:04Hoss knows Arnie better than any of us.
42:06He's just trying to keep anyone else from getting killed.
42:09Why happen that murdering maniac to get away?
42:12Now, Roy, you know that isn't so.
42:14If it was, I wouldn't have let him ride off like that.
42:16Ben, I should have known that you and little Joe are just as anxious as we are to get that
42:20woman killer to a rope.
42:22We're anxious to see justice, Don.
42:23It's the same thing.
42:25I'll tell you what I'm going to do.
42:26I'm going to shoot that wild man on sight.
42:28And if any of you have any guts, you'll do the same thing.
42:30Now, if you want to go on this posse, you're going to do what I say.
42:35Get back there.
42:37You about ready to lead us out this granite point?
42:42I'll get you there.
42:45All right, mount up, boys.
42:47But don't have any to take any chances.
43:08You was right, hoss.
43:11She was laughing at me.
43:16It hit me with the beads up around her.
43:19I know.
43:23I hurt her real bad, didn't I, hoss?
43:29Arnie.
43:33Arnie.
43:36You killed her.
43:38I guess I know that I did.
43:42I loved her, hoss.
43:44Why didn't you know that?
43:47You killed Jake Staple, too, didn't you?
43:50I didn't mean to.
43:52I'll come in his camp, and he just took one look at me,
43:56and he flung hot coffee in my face.
43:58It hurt awful, hoss.
44:01I got mad.
44:04I guess I just hit him too hard.
44:07You took his money.
44:09Wasn't going to do him no good, and I was hungry.
44:14Don't you see, hoss?
44:15I didn't mean to hurt nobody.
44:18That feller, he burnt me, and I got mad, and Sherry Bell, she was laughing.
44:26Arnie, it's all right.
44:30It's all over now.
44:39They're coming after me, huh?
44:44They got to, Arnie.
44:48I always know they'd be coming someday.
44:53I'm terrible sorry, Arnie.
44:59Hoss?
45:00Yeah, Arnie.
45:02I'm glad you brung me up here.
45:04This is a good place.
45:09I almost had it, didn't I, hoss?
45:12Little old farm.
45:15Little bunch of squealing pigs.
45:18Slopping out their trough.
45:21Old mama nosing them around.
45:26I'll come awful close.
45:32Arnie, turn around.
45:39What's that for, hoss?
45:44We're going to go down and meet them.
45:45I want to stay here.
45:47Arnie, get your horse.
45:50I ain't going.
45:52Arnie, we're going to ride down there together, just you and me.
45:55Now, I ain't going to let them hurt you.
45:58You try to stop them, they'll hurt you, too.
46:01No, they won't.
46:02I'll talk to them.
46:03They ain't going to hurt nobody.
46:09You're right, hoss.
46:12You wasn't lying to me.
46:15You're the only person I ever know who wouldn't lie to me.
46:20And I'll go with you.
46:24You're doing the right thing, Arnie.
46:36I couldn't let you do a thing like that, hoss.
46:39That it killed you, sure.
46:55Hey, wait a minute.
46:56I thought I saw something up there.
46:57Arnie?
46:58I don't know.
47:04Grounded points only about a quarter mile up now.
47:06All right.
47:28No, no, no, no.
47:51No, no, no, no.
48:12I tried to help him, Paul.
48:15I know, Hoss.
48:21He didn't want me to get hurt.
48:25He never wanted to hurt anything.
48:30I'm going to take Arnie to his farm.
49:01I'm going to take Arnie to his farm.
49:24I'm going to take Arnie to his farm.
49:47This has been a color presentation of the NBC television network.
49:54I'm going to take Arnie to his farm.
