00:10It's us, the Krat Brothers.

00:14And almost everywhere is owl country,
00:16because owls live on every continent
00:19in the creature world except Antarctica.
00:21There are about 268 different species of owl.
00:25Let's check out a few of them.
00:27Like the northern hawk owl,
00:28who hunts mostly during the day,
00:30and the snowy owl from the Arctic tundra.
00:33Or this guy, the screech owl.
00:36One of the smallest owls in North America.
00:40And look, staying still and being the color of the bark
00:43is a perfect camouflage.
00:45They'll sit motionless all day long,
00:47waiting for night to fall so they can go hunting.
00:53This is a barn owl.
00:55They live all around the world,
00:57and they're masters of sound.
00:59Their feathers have fluff.
01:01And it's almost like a muffler,
01:03so that when they fly, there's no sound at all.
01:08Meet the barn owl.
01:11Oh, and that round face.
01:13That's called a facial disc.
01:15It helps collect sound waves for the owl's hearing.
01:18I love the look of the barred owl's face.
01:21This is a great horned owl.
01:24A fierce hunter of the night
01:26and a top predator in North America.
01:29They are designed for hunting,
01:31and they hunt big prey.
01:33Everything up from a little mouse
01:34all the way up to rabbits, skunks, and even geese.
01:39They are powerful.

11:55They use that incredible owl eyesight to catch fish, seeing tiny ripples on the surface of the water, even at

12:15Owls have eyes the shape of cylinders.
12:18Most animals, and us too, have eye balls.
12:21So we can move it around like this.
12:24But since an owl's eyes are cylinders, they can't do that.
12:29Their eyes are fixed.
12:30So they turn their heads instead, with their amazing ability to swivel their heads about three quarters of the way
12:38around.
12:39We can't even come close to that!

16:39the boreal forest and a great gray owl that's a beautiful owl oh and their
16:53hearing is top-notch but how they don't even have ears see this owl has ears
17:01that one doesn't those aren't ears they're just longer feathers probably
17:06for appearance or camouflage and owls ears are holes underneath the feathers and
17:12lots of owls like the great gray have one ear higher up and one ear lower down that
17:18way sound reaches each ear at slightly different times and the owl brain has
17:23special mapping capabilities that can use those times to compute and pinpoint
17:28exactly where the sound is coming from it's called triangulation hmm and I've
17:35got something I've gotta do I think I know what she's up to

22:41what an amazing owl odyssey it wasn't easy getting back but we learned a
22:47lot about owls all around the world like the koala hunting powerful owl in Australia
22:53I left the pels fishing owl in Africa too don't forget the day loving underground living burrowing
23:01owls and the silent flying barn owls we saw in South America and in the north of Europe and Asia
23:07the
23:08great gray owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl and don't forget about the great horn owl who visited the
23:14Tortuga here in North America and those just scratched the surface there are about 268 species out there what better
23:24way to search for owls than owl power
23:26guys we just got home the creature mission the search for cool owls never ends the owl odyssey continues
23:41so owls are one of the coolest groups of birds in the creature world all owls share common owl features
23:48but each species has a special character and unique traits so let's go meet some more
23:54this is a Eurasian eagle owl one of the largest and most powerful owls in the entire world
24:04they're a relative of the great horned owl but much bigger and they live all over Europe and Asia
24:10these are the weapons of the owl the talons the gripping power of these feet is incredible up to five
24:19times a human's gripping power
24:22they're so big and powerful these guys can even hunt red foxes
24:28last winter we checked out the short-eared owl what a cool owl they love the open spaces that's where
24:37we found them
24:37and the amazing thing was this owl roosts in groups which is really unusual for owls you think of owls
24:46as a nighttime creature right
24:47but these short-eared owls they like to be active in daylight hours the early morning and the late afternoon
24:54that's when they're actively hunting one thing we found out is when a short-eared owl catches a vole it
25:01swallows it whole
25:03on that same trip last winter we saw another very different owl
25:10this is a saw wet owl they are so cute they're one of the smallest owls in north america saw
25:18wet owls of course have an excellent sense of hearing
25:21that's because they hunt at night when it's dark they can listen for their prey and they have adaptations
25:27that are special for it they have what's called asymmetrical ears so one ear is down lower the other
25:35ear is up higher and that helps them zero in on their prey no matter where in the world you
25:42live there are
25:43always cool owls to check out so get out in the wild to meet your owl neighbors keep on creature
