00:02In North America, the Appalachian Mountains are a range of rolling green
00:08hills with an amazing ecosystem winding along their base. We're here in a cold,
00:14clear Appalachian stream. It's us, the Kraft Brothers. I'm Chris. I'm Martin. And
00:20this is exactly where you want to be when you're looking for the largest
00:23salamander in North America. The challenge is the rocks are slippery and the
00:30currents fast. Another challenge is this salamander is really well camouflaged.
00:37Martin, by your foot. Hellbender! Awesome! Oh yeah! Now let's get a closer look at this
00:47hellbender. Wow! So slimy. All that mucusy, right? And flat. The body's so flat, so
00:55streamlined for life in these fast-moving rivers. And the tail is flat the other
01:00way, up and down, so that it can propel the salamander through the water. They
01:05can even swim upstream. And there are a lot of predators after these hellbenders.
01:10Mink, blue heron, otters. So sometimes they got to make a fast getaway. See how
01:14they have that really broad head? Well, the mouth runs all along that front part. So
01:20they have a big mouth that can open really wide. And that's for gulping
01:25crayfish. And now against this background, you can really see the coloration, which
01:31give it the power of camouflage in the sandy, rocky river bottom. Hellbenders and
01:38other salamanders are such cool creatures. And there are so many different kinds with
01:43amazing creature powers. Imagine if we had salamander powers. What if?
01:56on adventure with the coolest creatures. From the oceans to the trees. The brothers crack are going places you never
02:04get to see. Hanging with their creature friends. Get ready, it's the hour. We're going to sing some animals today
02:12with Creature Power.
02:25We're going to sing some animals. We're going to sing some animals. We're going to sing some animals. We're going

02:53Now this is how you stream an afternoon movie
03:04Hey, don't eat too many of those
03:06They're from the endangered butternut tree
03:29Oh, no, what's happening what is going on Koki we suddenly lost all power
03:41And the backup isn't responding all our technology is down
03:45What in the creature world so how are we finishing the movie
03:49Sorry gang, I've never seen anything like this
03:53The power is dead and and I have no answer
03:57No streaming today
04:00What really what are we gonna do we can still stream huh
04:06Just another kind of streaming salamander streaming what's that
04:14Oh, I know
04:18Salamander streaming
04:23They're not getting it salamander streaming is getting miniaturized
04:28And going down a stream looking for salamanders
04:31Going down a stream in teeny tiny boats looking for salamanders
04:36That's salamander streaming
04:42Oh, okay
04:43Interesting sounds fun
04:46It's a race to find as many salamanders as we can
04:49Before we get to that bridge
04:54Is it gonna be scary or fun
04:57Think of it like you're in a video game
04:59So it's real life raft chasers
05:02I'm in
05:03Seriously, we've got to fix the tortuga
05:06Our headquarters, base of operations, how we travel the world
05:11Oh, come on Koki
05:13Come salamander streaming with us just for a little bit
05:16No, I've got to get the tortuga running again
05:19Besides, salamanders are too slimy
05:26Oh, I love salamanders
05:28Naturally, they're water creatures
05:30What's the difference between a lizard and a salamander?
05:34I can answer that
05:37First off, salamanders aren't lizards
05:40Here are the differences
05:41Salamanders have smooth little fingers
05:44Lizards have claws
05:46Also, salamanders are amphibians
05:49While lizards are reptiles
05:52Both have nostrils for breathing
05:54Why?
05:55Salamanders can breathe through skin
05:57Lizards can
05:58Some salamanders live mostly on land
06:01And some salamanders live mostly in water
06:04And nearly every salamander spends some of its life in the water
06:08I wonder if there are any climbing salamanders
06:12Only some salamanders climb
06:14But there are plenty of swimming salamanders
06:18Let's go salamander streaming and find them
06:22Oh, what are we going to use for teeny tiny boats?
06:27I know
06:28Each of us has to make our own personalized mini boat
06:31Before we miniaturize
06:33Great idea, this will be fun
06:37Hmm, what should I make my boat out of?
06:49Oh, a butternut
06:51Kayak
06:52Kayak
06:53A butternut kayak
06:54Oh, and maple seed pods
06:58Plus a twig
07:00This will be my paddle
07:05Ooh, a crayfish
07:08Oh, and another one
07:10Shedding its exoskeleton
07:12Krayfish have a skeleton on the outside
07:15An external skeleton
07:17Called an exoskeleton
07:19Yeah, as a crayfish grows
07:21It sheds the old exoskeleton
07:23And there's a new one underneath
07:26After the crayfish crawls out and away
07:28It's left behind
07:30Named
07:31The crayfish exoskeleton
07:33Oh, does this look like an epic mini boat
07:37Or what?
07:38Every boat needs a name
07:40And I will name you
07:41Crayscal
07:44Now Martin's even naming boats
07:47Leaves have internal flotation properties
07:50And I can join them together
07:51With my bioplasma microwelder
07:53Into
07:54Ta-da
07:55My leafy longboat
08:00I just named mine too
08:02She's everything I need
08:03To win this salamander race
08:05And program a salamander power suit
08:08Along the way
08:09I like this one
08:12Uh, Jimmy
08:13That won't do
08:15But how about this
08:19Wow
08:20Pull on this rope
08:22To control the sail
08:23But not on this one
08:26Because this rope
08:27Keeps the raft tied together
08:28Thanks, Aviva
08:30I love it
08:35Okay
08:36We'll race from here
08:37Down to that bridge
08:39Expand
08:40Miniaturizer
08:44And now
08:45We miniaturize
08:49To the teeny tiny boats
08:58On your marks
09:00Get set
09:01Go
09:06How are we gonna get to the stream now?
09:09Uh
09:10Go
09:11Cokie
09:12Our HQ is down
09:14And they're playing
09:18Your race looks fun
09:20But I gotta fix the tortuga
09:21What if we get in the jam?
09:23There'd be no way to help
09:27Thanks, Cokie
09:29On your marks
09:30Get set
09:31Go
09:31Woohoo
09:32Yes
09:32Salamander streaming
09:34Salamander streaming
09:36To the stream
09:37Salamanders ahoy
09:40I love this kind of streaming
09:42Me too
09:43Because I really love
09:45Swimming salamanders
09:46Woohoo
09:47Actually, I think this is fun
09:50Hoist the mainsail
09:52Uh-oh
09:53Uh
09:55Help
09:56This water is
09:58Wet
09:59Well, at least I still have a stick boat
10:07Whoa
10:08A salamander
10:10Hi, little guy
10:12Hey, Chris
10:14I found a salamander
10:15What kind is he?
10:17That's a northern two-line salamander
10:20It has a long body
10:21And teeny tiny legs
10:23And it looks like it has racing stripes
10:26Sometimes they
10:27Jimmy
10:27Look behind you
10:29It's a salamander
10:31Eating salamander
10:33A predatory spring salamander
10:37Run
10:43Jimmy, Jimmy, are you there?
10:47Hmm
10:47Both of those salamanders
10:49Have these features
10:50One
10:51Moist skin
10:52And two
10:53No claws
10:54This is good info
10:56For a salamander power suit
11:07Phew
11:08Phew
11:08That was close
11:09But I found two salamanders already
11:13I'm in the lead
11:14Hey
11:16Oh
11:16Oh no
11:17I dropped my creature pod
11:20How am I gonna get out of here?
11:23Well, Jimmy's winning
11:25Well, Jimmy's winning
11:25He already found two salamanders
11:27Yeah, we gotta catch up
11:29My turn next
11:31See ya
11:32I have to bring out my kayak training
11:35Cross current paddle
11:37Eddie reverse
11:38Salamanders
11:39Oh-ho
11:39I love being on the water
11:42In my personalized kayak
11:44I will find salamanders
11:46Nothing can stop me
11:51I'll just slide into a roll
11:53And check for salamanders underwater
11:59What's going on?
12:02Whoa
12:06What in the creature world
12:08Powered down the tortuga?
12:10It's something technological
12:12That I'm just missing
12:27I'm in a red squirrel cache
12:30A cache being the place where a squirrel hides nuts
12:36How am I gonna get out of here?
12:39Okay
12:40What salamanders have we seen on our last adventures?
12:44The fire salamander
12:46And the human fish
12:47Wait a second
12:49I never even programmed a salamander power suit
12:53But we already have a lot of information
12:55Because check this out
12:57Almost every salamander
12:59Seems to have the same basic body design
13:01I can start with this
13:03And maybe
13:05I can make a universal salamander power suit
13:08That'd be salamazing
13:10And I think I found one
13:12A salamander
13:17I'm not a salamander
13:19I'm just lost
13:20Jimmy
13:23Hey Chris
13:25Ahoy, Aviva
13:27Martin
13:28Have you found any salamanders yet?
13:30Not yet
13:31But hey, look
13:33That looks like a classic salamander body design
13:36But it's almost three feet long
13:39Can a salamander be that big?
13:42Oh yeah, it can
13:43But only if you found the biggest salamander in North America
13:47The hellbender
13:49Wow
13:51Yes
13:52I found one too
13:54Tell me about them
13:55Where do they live?
13:56What do they eat?
13:57Oh yeah
13:58They live under big rocks
14:00In clear, fast-moving rivers
14:02Like this one
14:03And they eat crayfish
14:05A hellbender uses suction
14:07To catch crayfish
14:10I've got to play that back in slow-mo
14:13The hellbender opens its mouth quickly
14:15And the water rushes in
14:18Bringing the crayfish
14:20Into the hellbender's mouth
14:21Suction
14:24Uh, did you say crayfish?
14:27Get some good info
14:30I'm on it
14:33Hellbenders are beautiful
14:35In an awesomely ugly way
14:38Whoa
14:39And look at those foldy flappy flaps
14:42That's what I'll name them
14:43Foldy flappy flaps
14:47That's a great name, Martin
14:49One of your best
14:51Thanks, Aviva
14:52Hey, foldy flappy flaps
14:54Like every hellbender
14:56Breathes through his skin
14:58Absorbing oxygen out of the water
15:00So having folds of skin
15:02Gives him more skin to breathe with
15:05Breathing through skin?
15:07That's an amazing ability
15:08Yeah
15:09And check this out
15:12Hellbender has a streamlined shape
15:15Flat, wide, and low
15:17Which gives a hellbender the power
15:19To crawl on the bottom of rushing streams
15:22Without being swept away
15:24Even crawling upstream
15:26In the strongest currents
15:27Wow
15:28This is great stuff
15:32Streamline for walking in rushing water
15:34Yeah
15:35Hey, and don't forget the strong gripping toes
15:37With no nails or claws
15:41I know every system of this ship backwards and forwards
15:44But I'm missing something
15:46What am I missing?
15:48What am I missing?
15:51Okay, so the universal salamander features are
15:55Moist skin
15:56Long body and tail
15:58Toes with no nails or claws
16:00Can swim in water
16:02And walk on land
16:03A body design that can do both
16:05And, of course
16:07We've got plenty of variety
16:09And cute faces
16:10And colorful patterns
16:11To spice things up
16:14Steady
16:15Almost there
16:16Can you reach it?
16:18Just a little higher
16:23Looks like we're gonna have to find another way out
16:26Come on
16:33A way out
16:34Whoa
16:35Tiger salamander
16:37And it's a green one too
16:40Wait up, tiger salamander
16:44Whoa
16:46Not you again
16:50Tiger salamander, come back
16:53Oh, wait
16:54You're so green
16:55Don't go
16:58Our exit is blocked
17:00What are we gonna do?
17:02Martin, Aviva, come in
17:03Help
17:04I think we're being held captive by a red squirrel
17:08Who won't let us go?
17:10How are we going to get to them?
17:12We're tiny
17:12And they're all the way up river and overland in the forest
17:16Hmm
17:17Well, remember
17:18The power suit you're programming
17:20Has the powers of salamanders
17:22Who are amphibians
17:24Meaning
17:25They can move on land
17:26And move in the water
17:28Yeah
17:29So let's activate salamander powers
17:31And rescue Chris and Jimmy
17:33I love this part
17:35Seeing how my salamander power suit programming works
17:38Or if there's a malfunction
17:39Stop it
17:42Insert salamander power discs
17:48Touch salamander
17:51Activate salamander powers
18:05Oh, Aviva, remember
18:07You always gotta come out of the power glow in like a superhero adventure pose
18:11Huh?
18:12Oh, yeah
18:13Like this
18:15Like this
18:16Nice
18:16Now let's crawl upstream
18:18To save Chris and Jimmy
18:20To the creature rescue
18:26Wow
18:27Being streamlined like a hellbender
18:29Really works
18:32Grip the bottom
18:34And the water just blows over us
18:45What are you doing up there?
18:57What in the world?
19:10That was it?
19:11Nothing but some nuts
19:17Whoa
19:18How do we get to that log?
19:22Hellbenders are water specialists
19:24Not great at walking on land
19:26And we activated by touching a hellbender
19:29So we need a land power boost
19:32If we could reactivate with a touch of a land salamander
19:35Like this guy?
19:38Wow
19:38What kind of salamander is that?
19:41A tiger salamander
19:43Whoa
19:44And the tiger salamander is one fast salamander
19:49His powers are perfect for a land crossing
19:51How do we know red squirrels won't eat salamanders?
19:55Does a salamander have a defense?
19:57Yes
19:58Tiger salamanders secrete a toxic substance
20:01From their tail
20:02And raise it at the predator
20:04I think that red squirrel will leave us alone
20:06That should work
20:08Boost salamander land walking powers
20:14Oh yeah
20:15We're moving now
20:31Hey, there's a butternut seed in the squirrel's cache
20:34Psst, Chris, Jimmy
20:37We're here to rescue you
20:39Awesome
20:41But watch out for the squirrel
20:42Grab on
20:44Chris, you coming?
20:46Uh, yeah
20:47Be there in a second
20:48Okay
20:50But hurry
20:55Chris
20:57Alright, let's go
21:09Cool salamander suits
21:11Thanks
21:14Huh?
21:16Why is that red squirrel chasing us?
21:20And there's another one
21:23Bro, what did you take?
21:26Uh, nothing
21:27Uh, what about that butternut under your shirt?
21:31Oh, yeah
21:32I wanted to grow a butternut tree to climb on
21:35I only took one
21:36But that's why she's chasing us
21:39Drop the nut
21:40Oh, but they'll eat it
21:43We need to plant it to grow more endangered butternut trees
21:47Let's get out of here
21:48They're coming
21:54Yes, power is restored
21:57Everything is back in working order
22:00Uh-oh
22:01Now they really need the tortuga
22:04One miscalculation
22:06Tigress alamanders are pretty fast for small amphibians
22:09But we're no match for red squirrels
22:11But because we're amphibious
22:13We could go somewhere squirrels don't like to
22:15Into the water
22:17Because we are salamanders
22:19We are amphibious amphibians
22:23Uh, but I think squirrels can swim
22:39You got it going, Koki
22:41Yeah, I finally figured it out
22:44It was those troublemaking squirrels
22:52We should rename this adventure Koki's Tortuga Rescue
22:55Thanks, guys
22:57But I think I might like salamander streaming
22:59Oh, there's one
23:02A marbled salamander
23:03Koki's found one
23:05Hey, there's another one
23:07With spots
23:09A spotted salamander
23:11Wow
23:11Koki is good at this
23:14Oh, yeah
23:15Is that a blue spotted salamander?
23:18Yes, it is
23:19Oh, I thought I'd never be so lucky
23:22To see a blue spotted salamander
23:27That's free
23:28Koki wins the salamander streaming adventure
23:32Way to go
23:34You gotta love salamanders
23:37Living free
23:38And in the wild
23:41So salamanders are a really cool group of animals
23:45With over 800 species around the world
23:48The hellbender being one of the coolest salamanders of all
23:52And they're related to another group of animals
23:55The frogs and the toads
23:57Yes, salamanders, frogs and toads
23:59They're all amphibians
24:01But what makes an amphibian an amphibian?
24:05Amphibians are a group of creatures that live on land and in the water
24:09They're cold-blooded
24:11And they need water and a moist environment to survive
24:14And they can breathe through lungs, gills, or even their skin
24:18And have a look at the sides of this hellbender's body
24:21There are folds of skin there
24:23And those help the salamander breathe
24:26The more folds, the more oxygen they can take in
24:29Since they breathe through their skin
24:31It's so important that their watery habitat remains clean
24:35Hey, we're here at an awesome hellbender stream
24:38With hellbender expert, Dr. Bill Hopkins
24:41Who has been studying these incredible salamanders for what, the past 17 years?
24:45Yeah, that's right
24:45So what have you learned in that time?
24:47Like, what new things are you figuring out about hellbenders?
24:50I think one of the coolest things we've learned is that hellbender dads take care of their babies
24:55And they take care of them for months
24:56So we know now that dads hang out with their babies for like eight months
24:59They protect them from big predators
25:01And they make sure they're getting all the things like oxygen they need from the water
25:06And the water, you mentioned the water, their habitat, these cold streams
25:10What have you learned about their habitat?
25:12So hellbenders are in a lot of trouble
25:13So that's one of the big discoveries is that their populations are crashing
25:17And they need really clean water, like the water you see here to survive
25:20And even though they live underwater, they need trees
25:23The trees are really, really important for keeping the water clean
25:27Wow
25:27So another reason it's so important to have healthy forests
25:31To protect hellbenders
25:32Absolutely
25:35We love hellbenders
25:37And all kinds of salamanders
25:39And now it's time for you to go living back free and in the wild
25:48Keep on salamander streaming
25:50We'll see you on the Creature Trail
