Social media is abuzz with a new controversy involving three girls from Udupi district, Karnataka. According to a report, three students from a prestigious medical institute in Udupi were recently suspended for allegedly placing video cameras in the women's washrooms to secretly record their fellow students while showering or using the toilets.
As soon as this incident came to light, there were widespread protests by other students who were rightfully outraged over the blatant violation of privacy. They demanded strict action against the accused individuals, leading the optometry institute to promptly suspend the three students involved in the incident. The institute's director was quick to report the matter to the police on the morning of 20 July.
The suspension was based on two primary reasons cited by the institute's director. Firstly, the students had violated the college's ban on bringing mobile phones to the campus, and secondly, they misused these phones to create inappropriate videos within the washroom premises.
In response to the suspension of the students, a right-wing student organization known as the All College Student Power, operating in Karnataka, wrote a letter to the Udupi SP (Superintendent of Police) demanding legal action against the three Muslim students. They also threatened to stage protests if the college failed to file a complaint against the accused.
The situation escalated further when members of the All College Student Power appeared on news channels, making allegations that several Hindu women had become victims of this purported ""conspiracy."" However, the SP, Machhindra, clarified that there was no evidence to support this claim. In fact, a different video that was being circulated on social media to implicate the three Muslim students was proven to be from Tamil Nadu, not Udupi.
In light of these developments, the SP urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and rumors that were having negative impacts on the students, teachers, and society at large. It was crucial to maintain accuracy and sensitivity while dealing with such issues.
Subsequently, the All College Student Power posted a clarification on Twitter, acknowledging that the video being circulated was indeed from Tamil Nadu and not related to the incident in Udupi. They expressed gratitude to the police department for conducting a comprehensive investigation and urged everyone to avoid confusion and false claims.
The crucial question at hand is not about the religious background of the girls involved in this incident. What matters is the act itself, perpetrated by three individuals. It is unjust to associate an entire religion with the actions of a few individuals. Labeling these girls solely by their religion is unfair and misleading.
